Main culprit ~ o2 sensor

Contributing factors - old fuel filter, old injectors, plugs, M20;(plug wires, cap/rotor) and perhaps a heavy foot.

All general maint. stuff (except for the foot)

I'll see your 7.5mpg 525 and raise you a 10mpg 535.

Oh, that's not a raise? How about 6mpg in my Caddy? :) If I super-eggshell-baby-throttle it I can get 15 on the highway :(

have you done a manual check to confirm the computer is correct?

how can your o2 sensor be upside down?

did this just happen, or has it been getting worse gradually?

this just happend, i put a new cat converter, and it came with a hole to plug the O2
when installed they left the hole facing down, so i tryed to change the O2 but it broke and i dont want to drop the exaust down to take off the old O2, so my ney O2 is up side down which i know it will mess up but it has life time warranty so no woories except for the MPG

Being upside down in the exhaust stream won't make any difference to the sensor, but I'd be worried about it sticking out and catching on stuff and breaking. I'd be willing to bet that's where a lot of your problems lie. Also, is this an OE style O2 sensor, or is it the generic?

new cat? a poor weld wil lsuck air in and throw the 02 sensor readings off.

If it's upside down it'll collect condensation in the exhaust and fail in short time.

Not in a cat or any pipe that close to the engine. Condensation collects where you have cold pipes, not hot pipes, that's why mufflers always rot out before the rest of an exhaust system. Any possible condensation that close to the engine would burn off within seconds of starting the car.

Dunno bin. when installing widebands they always want the tip facing down, and those are closer to the exhaust ports than the factory o2 is on e34s. I'd for sure have that sucker flipped back over to be on the safe side.

Mine reads 6. I actually get like 17. Still not that great, but check your OBC calibration. Theres a way to do it online, search around.

Have you tried checking for leaks or have you done a manual check of the fuel economy? 7.5mpg is what I get when I take a 535 to the track. But don't trust the economy gauge in the car, figure out how much fuel its taking you to drive a certain distance. Its the best way.

+1. all manufacturers install them so they angle down slightly. they can get damaged from condensation, and i'm speaking as a former o2 sensor product manager.

i forget the name of the rule, but it states that if there is an obvious answer, then it's likely your problem. fix the cat/o2 sensor issue and i bet your mileage issue goes away.

try some of the other suggestions here, and come back and let us know what you find.

good luck.

I got 10 MPG on a take before. I was also sitting in a lot of traffic that week. I think the other guys are right in that your problem is from a lazy cat and O2 installation.
