View Full Version : Scored a 1995 540i SC !!
Turbo Charg Dynam 12-18-2007, 09:00 PM Found my xmas special yesterday.
1995 540i automatic
146k miles
Dinan Powerdyne non intercooled
Dinan exhaust (:rolleyes)
Dinan Sways
Dinan Tranny Chip
Bilstein Sports
Dinan Springs (not positive but seems likely)
More gear than stock (3.46 or 3.64)
16" Throwing Star knock offs
Rust free but pretty rough body
Better than average interior.
Black/Tan.
Runs well. Entire cars needs minor attention.
I only plan on doing some maintenance, vogtland springs and style 19 wheels with 245s all around. Also going to increase the boost level and possibly add an intercooler but it looks like a packaging nightmare.
I will not even tell you how much I paid. :D
Todd
ohlins8990 12-18-2007, 09:01 PM pics?
Spiller 12-18-2007, 09:03 PM 16" T-Stars? What do those look like?
Turbo Charg Dynam 12-18-2007, 09:04 PM pics?
It's too ugly for pics at the moment. Has an ugly pinstripe, needs to be lowered and nice wheels. Will post pics as soon as it has those items taken care of.

I don't want anyone to be sick so i am trying to keep that at myself.:devillook
RVAE34 12-18-2007, 09:12 PM Well done. Can't wait to come check it out ;)

Sick = good deal I assume? I am really interested in pics also. Maybe take some now and wait to post them until it gets fixed up. Do a before and after spread.
Congrats on your Xmas present.
makaveli2k 12-18-2007, 09:19 PM Tell us you Pansy! =)
Turbo Charg Dynam 12-18-2007, 09:19 PM Sick = good deal I assume?
That's correct.
I am actually surprised at how fast it is. It certainly helps that it is 30F outside.
lowell 12-18-2007, 09:41 PM This sounds awfully like the one that was on eBay a few months back in Columbus and had whacky leakdown numbers on an original block, ergo a failing nikasil. Lots of dents/dings and the like, no real rust.
Think that auction went for 5 grand. There was a thread on it. Stupid powerdyne. The auction went for about 5 grand too much.
Good luck. I have a good alusil if you need it.

So how much did you pay for it?!
Binjammin 12-18-2007, 10:12 PM Don't know if you know or not Todd, but there are pinstripe removal tools. It's a big rubber cookie that gets put in a drill, and you just turn it on and go to town. Leaves paint perfect, never had one damage paint. You can get them at local paint supply stores, usually $15 for two wheels, and each wheel is good for 3 or 4 cars, a hell of a deal. Only thing is that it doesn't work on painted stripes, only sticker stripes.
So, how much did you pay?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing...

That's it. Paid $4250. The negative comments from the "Internet know it alls" make me laugh.
I don't need a comp/leakdown test to know if an engine is healthy. It takes about a 1 minute drive and a little listen. Car runs very well. The body is beat but I have the correct color hood and the dent wizard can easily fix the rest if I choose. Most likely I'll just play around with it, do big smokey burnouts and take it to the dragstrip in the spring.
If it dies a sudden death, I'll take it apart in one day, sell you guys the pieces and likely make a nice profit. :D
In the meantime let's see what I can get out of it.
BTW, the Powerdyne was rebuilt earlier this year.
Todd
RVAE34 12-18-2007, 10:29 PM Well played sir. Nice score. Dinan parts alone are worth that. I have always wanted to do a S/C 540 after my M50 goes turbo then N/A M5. Maybe Alpina B10 last. Anita's perhaps one day:evil2
xatlas0 12-18-2007, 10:30 PM If the engine dies a horrible death, then how about some M60 FI options? :devillook

Uh... Hey, Todd... you know, there's no challenge in making a V8 go fast with a blower, you should trade for my M20 525. If you can make that go fast you'll be a hero. I'll manage to survive driving the Dinan car for now, don't feel bad for me.:D
Seriously, congrats on a nice score.
Redfive 12-19-2007, 08:26 AM Ben. You should check out Todd's site. He has an M20 turbo setup and one of his customer cars running that turbo setup runs in the 12s.
Good score Todd. Great xmas gift.

Ben,
I have previously owned all the e34 iterations except the 540i. 1989 525i automatic, 1993 525it, 1992 535i turbo and now this 540i.
Todd
Testercles 12-19-2007, 09:43 AM An E34 for Christmas, nice to see someone else had that idea too.

Turbo Charg Dynam 12-19-2007, 10:16 AM Powerdyne is gonna blow UP
:rolleyes
I am not sure who you are trying to warn? I stopped believing the internet experts years ago.
It was rebuilt 6 months ago. It didn't blow up it, it was noisy. They don't blow up, the internal belt fails. Not a big deal. Things like blowers and turbos and just about everything on any car is going to fail and require attention at some point.
Comments like yours are pointless.

I was being comical Todd - relax.
I wouldn't depend on the powerdyne one bit. Been there done that washed my hands and moved on. Its a good find for super cheap, perhaps, but those things were probably the worst attempt at FI to date.

What about the 530i? And the M5? Oh, and BTW, I'm not sure if you know this or not, but I've heard that vogtland springs are bad to put on the V8 cars because the springs aren't made for the weight of the V8. I don't have any specific experience with this, but this is just what I've heard.
Edit: Car sounds like it would be fun. You should drop in a 6 speed, and you'd have my (current and somewhat realistic) dream car.

Are the two of you related? You can't possibly think I'd seriously ask him to trade a 525 for a Dinan 540, or that I'd be even remotely within my right mind expecting him to say yes, do you? :D
I guess I'll just have to fix the 525 :(

hahahahahahhahahaha
Had I known it was you, I would have answered the post differently. Bet my e34 is faster than yours. :D
Turbo Charg Dynam 12-19-2007, 11:40 AM What about the 530i? And the M5?
You are correct. I have not owned either of those.

I am kinda sorta redoing my setup and haven't posted much on the forums :)

I know you are. I'll be kinda redoing the setup on the 540i too. I'll post dyno sheets before/after.

hopefully the "kinda redoing" will involve some sort of boostable TT fun, riiiight? :devillook

Nice sounds like fun - we'll have to compare afterward!

You said "If you can make that go fast you'll be a hero. " I'm saying he's already done that.
atl530i 12-19-2007, 10:56 PM If those are Dinan springs LMK...
Congrats on the buy!

OOOoooh. I get it now.
Damn, I was trying to be all witty and everything but all I did was sound stupid and make my headache worse :(
