Is there any law in CA that says that dealers cannot sell cars that aren't street legal?

I just bought my 2005 BMW from a CA dealer with tint on the front windows, which is apparently illegal in CA. I even asked them directly if it was legal when i was buying the car, and they said I would have no problem.

Of course I was pulled over a few weeks later for having tinted front windows. The dealer is far away and i can't get back there before the ticket is due b/c of the holidays, so i was hoping they would pay to have the tint removed. but they refuse. i have to go out of my way to take the car back and have them do the work to bring the car into code for CA. seems kinda strange.

do i have any leverage here? i know in CT, a dealer must check a box on the title confirming that the car is street legal. Also, does BMW corporate have and standards that govern this? how can i contact them?

Thanks!

That does not sound legit. When my dad bought his last car he had to sign off that he was aware that the car didn't have a front plate and that if he was pulled over the dealership wasn't liable.

dealer can sell you anything it wants, it doesnt have to be street legal....just like a dealer can sell you a race car, doesnt mean you can drive it on the street

thanks silverbeam... that is a good sign.

SRT Handz, that would make sense, but the dealer also registered the car for me, so seems that that implies they know they are selling me a street legal car. also, wouldn't BMW USA have some rules in their CPO program (I should have mentioned this car was CPO) the require the car be street legal?

anyone know where i can find some documentation on this?"

CA doesn't allow front tint right? My friend tinted front and back and he had to roll down the windows just in case a cop saw him. :P

Personally I don't like tint on cars, which is why mine doesn't.

Having tint is kinda like having a loud exhaust, when the Po Po comes around, you better hide it.

....i have tint because it is a must in so cal, saves your interior.....but if i see a cop, my window go down

oh so it is illegal. how odd, i've driven with highway patrol and different police cars around my neighboorhood and they don't pull me over. and i just leave my windows up. in fact there was one time i was driving on the 57 and i passed a highway patrol on my left...then he flashed his lights and pulled someone over on my right. i just kept going. maybe cuz its not so dark? hmm

tint is basically by the cops discretion, kinda like if your speeding 71 mph in a 70 mph zone, some cops pull u over some dont

Yeah, alot of car-related stuff is like that...like exhaust and clears. And last night I forgot to put on my headlights and was driving for like a minute with fogs only...I passed a cop and he didn't do anything, but if it was a d-bag looking for something to do he could've came after me
