For you guys that have gotten after market bumpers did you get them painted at a shop or DIY? Are there any good guides for DIY'ing or suggested colors/techniques to doing it?

I suggest you pay to get it done professionally. I reccomend B-Line. A little $$ though, but well worth it and they have lifetime warranty on the paint.

It's cause none of these guys have the patience to paint stuff themselves :stickoutt
I figured I could buy an HVLP gun and paint stuff for only the price of paint for the rest of my life for the price of painting one bumper :cool

That is true. But sometimes even though you save money on the part it's always worth it to spend a little on paint. Believe me from previous experience I got a hook up on paint and got a deal, but later on wasn't happy with the job done and paid to do it again. That's just my opinion., cause I don't like parts of my car looking like sh!t.
