View Full Version : Starting to tune!
a32guy 12-15-2007, 06:21 PM Went down to EPL (www.eplabs.net) today for some saturday dyno tuning / shakedown pulls.
Stupid me forgot to install my Walbro and maxed out the stock fuel pump :mad Only could rev it out to 5500. Ended up at 416whp / 400 wtq uncorrected before we called it a day. Corrected and smoothed plots to 384/374 on EPL's mustang dyno.

I have a few mechanical things to do on it for sure, but felt good to get it up there and start the process. Timing maps were super conservative, haven't even started tuning those yet, just dialing in fuel. I think I'll be at my goal of 420-450 whp at 15psi on pump gas with more tuning and dialing in the timing.
Big thanks to Tony and Dave for helping me out!
M52 POWER! 12-15-2007, 06:32 PM Even though they're base settings would you mind posting your timing maps?

325icintn 12-15-2007, 07:31 PM Pretty smooth for base maps. A+++! How's the idle?
gboezio 12-15-2007, 07:39 PM Looks like someone pulled the plug of the dyno at 5500 rpm, the line ain't going anywhere ?!
a32guy 12-15-2007, 09:09 PM Thanks guys, getting there :)
Idle is still a little funky. Once it warms up, it doesn't hit the idle table and runs rich. I've got a couple things I'm going to try.

Yes! After it's tuned I demand some videos of that beast!
Good work.
SiGmA 12-15-2007, 09:21 PM What size injectors again? 65lb?

60#
How much does ELP charge for a custom tune ?
Not sure on that one. You'd have to contact EPL for pricing.
What ecu?
Bosch 0-261-200-413 M3.3.1 :D
xjeeper 12-16-2007, 01:03 AM Bosch 0-261-200-413 M3.3.1 sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Good luck, keep us updated!!!
5mall5nail5 12-16-2007, 01:05 AM So chris are you tuning it yourself or is that shop doing it?
a32guy 12-16-2007, 01:11 AM EPL is doing the majority of the work. I've done a few things on my own here and there to get it driving, but they're the ones with the experience and will make the numbers.
jszy25 12-16-2007, 12:14 PM very nice...im looking forward to seeing this thing in action. videos are a must hah.
BobRoss 12-16-2007, 02:11 PM great news Chris. keep it up!
drumike102 12-16-2007, 04:14 PM Wooooooooooooooooo Dangyyyyyyyyyyyy. Sorry got a lil excited there. Good work there Chris. Looks like barney is getting the royal treatment.
M52 POWER! 12-16-2007, 06:58 PM Guess not.
Julz69 12-16-2007, 07:16 PM Congrats. When all the fckin snow is gone around here I want to see this beast in action. And maybe a little race as comparison (not going to show much cause I am N/A, but fun anyways).
I don't think you will have a problem hitting your goal either.

el bob 01-17-2008, 01:30 PM So EPL has experience tuning 413 ecu cars?
bennyfizzle 01-17-2008, 01:32 PM So EPL has experience tuning 413 ecu cars?
the better question here is why the hell havent we gotten a single vid less that exhaust clip.
markesq 01-17-2008, 01:34 PM New tuner in the market?
BMWManiac 01-17-2008, 01:54 PM Is this with a Tec3, AEM, etc?

+1
SiGmA 01-17-2008, 02:06 PM Its a stock DME, I'm confused by why he's going with a SM4 however if they were able to tune his DME... Chris, wanna chime in?
a32guy 01-17-2008, 02:10 PM This was with the stock 413 box. I pretty much made a base file and came up with this.
To be honest, I was having a strange running rich @ idle problem that I could not figure out. All the tuners I have talked to have never seen this and don't know what to make of it. Whether it comes down to the specific injectors I used or if I have a bad sensor, I have no idea. I abandoned ship on the 413 dme for now. I was about to order a boost controller, and decided that $300 could be better invested into a standalone. I was about to order the LinkPlus G3 box, but ended up ordering an Autronic SM4.
Info on the G3 box here: http://www.linkecu.com/products/engine-management/Wire-In/linkplusg3folder/linkplusg3
Info on the SM4 box here: http://www.autronic.com/page_files/sm4_kit.htm
When it arrives I plan on making it plug and play with a gutted 413 box. I'll be sure to post up some pictures and whatnot. Not sure what to do as far as ignition goes right now. Either two 3-channel bosch ignitors or a DIS-4 box I'm thinking. The 500r is out of my price range at the moment.
This is why there's no vids Benny, haha. Car has been sitting pretty much. I still plan on tuning on EPL's dyno. As to whether they are into the tuning the 413 boxes, I'd probably say no. They specialize in the ME7 market. B5 S4 and 996tt specifically.
SiGmA 01-17-2008, 02:12 PM If I may ask, how much did you spend on the SM4? I know retail and I know shop cost, I'd just like to know actual customer price!
bennyfizzle 01-17-2008, 02:20 PM aw man, i was really hoping you could make the 413 work :(
obviously it would be preferable to a standalone when it comes to daily driveability, right?

I ordered from Vivid Racing for $2249 plus shipping. Here's the sketchy part-- I found them on the Autronic dealer list, and simply ordered from them because they had an online store. Within the next couple days I heard from Vivid and they were very polite and professional on the phone. Said it would take about a week to get the ecu from Australia, then they'd ship it out. Real nice people over there.
Then a few days later, I see they are no longer listed as an authorized dealer on Autronic's website. I then find a thread on an evo forum about how they aren't authorized to sell Autronic products and they should remove them from their website. I checked today-- No SM4 listed on their site...
As long as I can register for the Autronic forums, I'll be happy. They have been very polite and professional so far, so we'll see.

Me too, doh! Yeah but I should be able to get it damn close to a stock ecu with a box like the SM4.

Oh well, sell me your Ostrich. :)

Dude check this out. I could set both of those to 0, idle fuel, and all main fueling tables to 0, literally a 0 in every cell-- and the car would still idle in the 11.8 area. :confused
But sure if you want the Ostrich, give me a PM. Once I'm up and running with the Autronic, I'll sell for sure.
325icintn 01-17-2008, 03:01 PM "Total [disassembly]; the only solution." We're just trial and error, hunt and peck without it.
highboostingm3 01-17-2008, 03:09 PM You were trying to do the 413 yourself? Why isn't Mike McCoy doing this for you? You just spent $2200+ on the SM4 and now you will be a guinea pig doing a harness and CDI for that when you only want 425whp? :help

Yeah I was trying it myself. Michael and Clifton helped me tremendously with the project.
True it was some bucks, but I know I'll never have to worry about engine management for wherever my goals take me. I've moved up my goal since 425... I'll probably find out what US spec S50 rods are good up to :devillook
Also it will be all plug and play, so I can easily revert to stock ecu and move the SM4 into any other project car I'll have throughout my life.

Wow...very interesting information since you had experience with the 413 and are moving away from it.
Good luck with the SM4. That is a very nice standalone and yes, you will be able to move it from car to car which is nice. Can't wait to see your car with 700whp! :buttrock
I really wish a tuner out there will make a PnP for the SM4 some day. :devillook

you havent even hit the 400whp mark yet and you're already going bigger :rofl
a32guy 01-17-2008, 03:50 PM you havent even hit the 400whp mark yet and you're already going bigger :rofl
Technically I did :stickoutt
I saw no point in continuing to tune if I couldn't get the idle sorted. Thats all.

So when you said Michael, you mean Michael McCoy? Just confused because I don't see him not figuring out idle.
Oh and I had the G3 box on my car for a little while. It burnt up due to sweet Mechtech wriing techniques.

I do mean Michael McCoy. He has not seen this until very recently. When he figures it out, I hope he shares what the problem was!
Really Cam? Did you like the G3 (if you got to run the car on it)? I was going to go with that instead, but they were away on vacation-- and I'm impatient. :)

The car ran on it but the vanos was wired incorrectly (solenoid burnt up and an MSD box plus the ignitors and box haha) and there was this thing where the car died between shifts near redline so essentially every time I was WOT and shifted it would bump start making the car fall on it's face between shifts. It was lame, but that was due to wiring. One thing I hated about it is that they make you purchase a special connector in order to hook up a serial cable to it. So stupid. Why not have a serial outlet on it like all other ECUs? Durrr. Plus you have to have Link Ignitors plus an ignition box? Stupid.
SM4 is the way to go. It has an autotune feature that is so good Andreas (PPF) has told me on IM that he trusts it and let's it tune cars for him on the street with 900hp.
So your car is the 60# he told me about. Hrmmmmm...cause that tune is for my friend setting up a GT35R custom kit. So he will be sending you new chips until the idle is figured out?
Ya know my friend installed a TTS2 system and his idle was all whack. We knew it couldn't be the tuning so the TPS was checked and that was the issue. Then while driving something happened and idle was messed up again. Turned out a gromet holding the throttle cable broke. Fixed that and good as new. So check for hardware issues like that first.

I rember George from ICS telling me big ugly made about 650whp(gt35r turbo'd), and it has a fully stock s50 with just a MLS head gasket.

nope. Not the same car, and i'm not the one that was tuning his car. I provided general technical support like I do for anyone that is making a strong effort to tune the 413 on their own. :)
a32guy 01-17-2008, 05:56 PM That's messed up. Did you try changing the MAF map too?
Yep. Had no effect. It was like it went into a fault table on very light load / idle.

well youd have problems too if someone bolted a system for pressurizing your insides onto the exhaust side of you.
