View Full Version : My lighting options for under 500 usd?

I have stock everything on my 96' 328i sedan. The lighting is dim and I am looking to upgrade it. Although I would like glass covers, my plastic ones don't really have any of the yellow/fog that shows up on plastics so often, so if I could keep the stock housings to save on money while only upgrading the internals that would be great.

I really want angel eyes, but I don't know about them working on stock headlights, how they mount, any additional wiring involved, etc. I don't really know too much about HIDs other than they need some sort of power modification box between the stock power wires and the bulb.

What are my options?

edit: sorry for the duplicate, I don't know how that happened.

Also looking into clear corners, and figuring that into the price.

stock headlights and angel eyes are not a good mix, they can not be installed in them.
hids do not work well in the stock headlight either so its best to upgrade to euro ellipsoids, with a $500 budget you can get a set of depo headlight along with hids and angel eyes, all pre-installed so you can just drop them in and plug n play.
corners are ~$35.
you can view all our packages here as well as order, if you would like to add corners just let me know which package you want and i'll make you a paypal link:

I've decided against the HIDs because of legallity and I want the
DEPO+PNP+PREDATOR CHROMIUM S/G ( https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=lwQUMi0nv-4Xyq58EEC9VAm5hl_gILAVmezUEenFcQwCRK202KA5QoMdHQK&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f3893a48c4ade7e5f97951af3b 1813a4533cbed6b60706f2a )
package. I assume it doesn't come with any bulbs other than the angel eyes? Can I get my lights any brighter without going HID?
If they are plug and play, how does turning them on and off work? Do the angel eyes come on with the parking lights, or only on full lights?

I also want the clear corners and the clear side markers.

i included a link with the bulbs.
without going hid you are throwing money away on marginal bulbs, some like silverstars but they and anything else pales.
the angel eyes are usually connected to the parking lights.

Will there be any improvement at all without going with HIDs? Also are these Predator Chromium, or is there a difference?

You want HIDs. Believe me. I didn't know that I NEEDED them until I had the "want" to buy them. After driving around with regular halogen and then HIDs... I couldn't imagine driving without. Well... I could. But I really really don't want to.

Seriously tho. Get some HIDs!

I just read about how they are illegal on cars that don't come with them from the factory. I know most people don't have any problems with the police but I'd rather not risk it. I do believe it's a stupid law but with as many ricers as we have down here in Florida it is probably for the better. I'm 18 and need to avoid getting pulled over by police for any reason =).

im in FL, we have some of the most lax cops in the country, as long as you keep the hids in check and dont go ricer purple you'll be fine, i have had mine for 4 years now without a single look.
stick to 5k or 6k and you'll never have to worry about them.

I don't know anyone with an HID kit to compare this to. Would these be brighter and if so, how much, than the BMWs that come with HID stock? I'll have to go do some night driving and take a look tomorrow.

they will be a lot brighter, brighter to a point where you can actually see at night.
BMW uses 4300k for max output but it looks like 6000k, so you can go 5000k or 6000k safely and without any issues.

Is 5000k dimmer than 6000k or just more red? I'm worried about HID being too bright and halogen being too dark. Can I get something even darker than 5000k to ward off police more? I'm a tad paranoid =(.

it has nothing to do with darker, you need to stay with white light IE: 5000k or 6000k, you get in trouble when your lights are purple or otherwise obnoxious to other drivers, white is fine.

I've gone back to the US halogen headlights temporarily while I complete my fx35 retrofit... honestly, I prefer driving with the US lights over the depo's with HID's. The hid's are a ton brighter, but you can see further and more down the road with the halogens. The crappy ECE cutoff + made for halogen makes the HID's not do what they are MENT to do. Plus the high beams on the US lights are better than the depo's.

I'm sure people will disagree because "there's no way halogen could be better than a rebased HID bulb in a halogen housing":)

I guess you've got a freak set of headlights then, because my E36 headlights are HORRIBLE. I can barely see anything, and I have $40 hella halogens in them. I just ordered my HID setup yesterday, though :)

On topic, most people that see any BMW with an HID setup will assume it's OEM since most luxury cars have pre-installed HID's already. You really won't have a problem with them, and if for some reason you did get pulled over -- just say they came that way from the factory and you will readjust them if you are told they are too bright for oncoming traffic. The only reason a cop would stop you for HID's anyway, is the color being way off (10k+ color kits) and/or not having them aimed properly.

They really don't look oem though - oem projectors have an insanely sharp cutoff that tends to 'flicker' to oncoming traffic. Above that cutoff, they just look bright - but the depo's glare like crazy. I had mine aimed pretty low the past month or two because I was tired of getting flashed every night -- which means I could barely see.

I dont know of a single person to have been pulled over for properly aimed 5000-6000k HID's. So long as they arent colored differently, or blinding officers you shouldn't have any problems.

i was behind a cop last night and i had both my 55w hids and 35w fog hids on and i drove past the cop without a problem and im in California were all cops are dicks. just get some basic 5 or 6k hids you will see the difference and it looks oem bmw like if a cop pulls you over just say the bmw dealer installed them 4 you
