Folks, it is time for me to buy a new clutch for my 96 328i... I tried to take a car over on the freeway and have massive slip... not fun. Anyway, I'm looking for opinions on different types of clutches and input on where to have them installed. Money is important, but I can stretch a little.... please advise away!

Well if you dont intend on adding a load of power to your car or a load out of your wallet, just get a stock clutch. Turner's got a kit for $220. I'd like to see what other alternatives there are as far a sport kit. So far, the ones I've seen for BMWs are a little too pricy...unless I had forced induction, its not worth the price.

I'm wondering if anyone has had their clutch replaced in the San Jose/South Bay area. I've gotten a quote from one shop, but it comes out to almost $850... a little steep if you ask me. I need the clutch soon so I'm really looking for your help on this folks.

AceHazardX and OneSickBimmer... thanks for the responses!

hey,

i got a M5 clutch w/UUC stage 2 flywheel. im actually gettin it installed at Rennworks in moutain view tmr. They quoted me $450. Ya , the price u got quoted seems high.

Artec Motorsports in SF is a lil bit cheaper, but Rennworks works on full out race cars, so thats why im takin my care there.

:dunno Well, I'm running out of options. Looks like everyone in the area is going to charge between  $800-$870. Damn... that's one expensive clutch job. I'll schedule to have it done this week, as I want to drive the car to LA the following weekend.

Ok, folks, any pearls of wisdom before getting it done?

I have the AA high perf clutch (turbo clutch), had it installed by capitol transmission (south san jose), I know the guy who owns the shop, Kurtis, had the clutch, uuc flywheel, and uuc short shift kit installed for $600.

Rennworks is a good place too, if you can get the price quoted above, and it's close.

wow, your M5 clutch is slipping already???

Since you have a UUC 8.5lb flywheel, i'm not sure what options you have. I'd go back to the M5 clutch. bimmerparts.com has them for $340, I believe.

Dinan330ic, I had written that post before getting my clutch & flywheel replaced! :) I am so happy with this setup, except for the fact that it has fed the mod bug... now I feel like doing lots of things. Now, I just need to find some more money.... :az:

BTW, I did end up going to Rennworks to get the job done. They did a nice job and Steve was very friendly and professional. I highly recommend them if you need some work done.

And yes, there are lots of race cars there... I was having a blast walking around the two racing E36's and the Porsches in the parking lot.... WOW!

Damn I didn't know you could fit an m5 clutch in there...I was going to opt for the m3 clutch this summer...is there anything you need beside the clutch kit, and slave cylinder to do this job?
Do you know if it will apply to the E36 325i?

Your posts will be greatly appreciated!

AceHazardX, yes, the E34 M5 clutch fits perfectly... bolts right on for my car... not sure about the 325. :dunno: I don't think my slave cylinder was replaced though.

MotorWerkz, is your mechanic affiliated with a shop or does he do private work only?

///ti, I just don't have the time nor tools for this stuff.

Great, thanks for the help guys. I hope I can get something installed this summer...whether it be from an m3 or m5, it should make the world of a difference.

Holy cow, that's a good price! Can anyone vouch for his skills? Do we have any satisfied M3 owners who've had their clutches replaced?

Excellent - I'll be interested to hear the results. Btw - are you going to do anything else while you're in there? rear main seal? guibo? Also, I'd like to know whether or not he includes throwout and pilot bearings with his price.

Thanks, and good luck!

If you can make it over to Berkeley, give Donna at Clutch Mart a call - 510-527-9177. She's a BMW club racer, knows her stuff, and should be able to give you a decent price...

Hey Jim,

Is that for parts, labor, or both? How's the crazy racecar? And that isn't Donna Seely Donna, is it?

That would be to get the whole job done - parts, labor, etc. And yup, that's Donna Seeley - she manages the place in Berkeley. Race car is resting right now - needs some motor work, and I'm pondering what the next step is to make the car faster. Got a lot of ideas, but can only afford some of them...

Wow, is that what she's doing now? I'll have to get in touch with her. Cool!

I can't 'member - you didn't have the cam kit, did you?

scott

PS - I want to make my car faster, too. I think if I just strap an STi or an Evo VIII onto it I'll be all set... :)
