so i am on the varsity soccer team

its tradition to race the entire team one person at a time if a teammate buys a new car

i just got my car so i was forced to race the team starting off with the only other bmw, an 88 325is e30 with a turbo and a whole mess of mods with stick

vs my stock (hey ive had it for a few days, im only human) 04 325ci e46 with steptronic

the customary 3 honks and we went off from a green light in a 2 lane street , close to 80mph, and more than a second in the lead, i slowed down and went back to school with a smile on my face

pretty cool race as it was my first ever.. cant wait to see what havoc i can reek with some mods :]

i'll update you guys with what happens after i race the rest of the team (mainly rice rockets)

First, i'm a little confused. Why on earth would you do three honks at a light? The whole purpose of racing from a light is to go on green, not wait till green, sit there and do three honks, then go.

Makes no sense.

second, im not being an ass at all but for future reference it is wreak, not reek*

because i didnt know when he would want to start racing, he said whenever he honked 3 times.. it just happened to be at a green light :cool

and thanks for the correction, learn something new every day

how much psi is your friend running and "a whole mess of mods" means what, does your friend beat his car to death because it seems like he should be running a bit stronger than that but i suppose 20 years can do alot to a car.... maybe a few more details about the run

do us all a favor and race him from a 40 roll. Then come back and let us know how that turns out.

not to rain on your parade but i think you beat the driver here, hence me asking for the rolling start.

before i yanked the m20 engine in my 1988 325is for the engine swap which is currently in process, i gutted the car and did some testing to see how quick it was. I cut the exhaust about 2 feet below the exhaust manifolds, took the intake off (left the MAF), took off the hood, and did a few test passes. The best i can figure the car weighed about 2400lbs at the time.

It was running 2.4x 60 ft times with wheelspin for the first 30 feet or so, and high 6 second 0-60's.

so by gutting my car and cutting off the exhaust and removing the intake, it was faster than you car is in stock trim. (no offense, you have a nice car. I'm just stating a fact) My point is, there's no possible way you should beat an 88 turbo 325is, unless it is tuned terribly, beaten to death, or needs the old driver mod.

Anyway, good kill and welcome to BMW ownership

didnt think anyone would be interested but because you asked, sure

my friend (hugo) has a lot of visual mods: decals, m3 body kit, bbs rims, lowering springs, clear lights, and a few interior touch ups like an m shift knob and sparco seats

and psi wise im not sure, he just told me he had a turbo, then revved up his engine for me and i believed him lol

but hugo is known for abusing his car, we all feel bad for the thing because he doesnt know how to tune it (you didnt hear that from me though ;] )

the race was pretty quick not much more than 10 seconds, in a more deserted part of town. clear skies and sunny weather

i shifted into first with my steptronic and got ready for him, he got a little head start but i could see him turn his head as i smoked past him within the first 3 seconds...
i hit second gear at around 5.5-6k rpm and used it till around 60ish, then shifted to third and finished him off

i had an initial lead of more than a second, but i suppose his turbo kicked in and he caught up a little

we were reaching a red light and it was obvious he had lost, so we both slowed down and came to a stop at the light

like i said it was my first race, but the thrill was crazy, and i now know the true power of my car and respect it more with each passing day :D

i hate callin bs cause im sure you did beat him but im gonna have to agree with you beating the driver because car vs car you shouldnt have won

on a more positive note.... nice car, good purchase... i love my '04

thanks and yeah, thats the whole point of the turbo, luckily for me, we start races from 0mph :redspot

just so you know, its almost always quicker to run in auto mode. With a car like yours (traction not being a real issue) the factory programmed shift points are perfect (right on redline) and it is almost guaranteed to be quicker (because it is more precise) than manually shifting the car.

go kill some rice:buttrock

nice, never knew that, the steptronic always seemed quicker

would you recommend the normal auto or the "S" (sport mode).. because they both feel the same to me

I wish then my awd could clean up

get into the scene a bit more and youll find rolls are big and to alot of people more important than a race from a dig because it removes factors like awd and lag

i havent driven an e46 325, but im assuming it has a WOT (wide open throttle) switch under the go pedal (like so many other bimmers) in which case it will perform the same (shifting wise).

The main difference b/w the modes on most cars is higher shift points at part throttle operation, but when you trip the full throttle switch (which you should be able to feel under your foot) then youll be headed for the perfect redline auto trans shifts regardless of which mode you are in.

i would use sport mode because of the slim chance you get a little more power with it. i doubt it changes tuning on your car, but it does on some. I'm not familiar with your car but i'm sure someone on here will pipe up eventually.

With an auto, race from a dig whenever possible.

Unless you have big traction problems, rolling starts are kind of a sissy thing to do anyway.

I only told you to race the turbo 325 from a roll because im curious as to whether or not the kid can drive.

thanks for the info man, i always wondered why that button was there.. for a while i thought it was a defect with the pedal :(

depends on what you wanna know...

who has the faster car- then go from a roll

or who the better driver is- then start from a dig

While that is true, the only problem is the speed of the roll can give one car a decent handicap over another, depending on the engines sweet spot and gear ratios.

too bad u arent in oklahoma...I'd race you w my non-turbo 325is and win. a decently tuned m20 turbo will outrun an e36 M3 let alone an e46 325ci auto.. the e46 makes bout what 170-180ish hp in a 3200lb car compared to the e30s 164hp in a 2800lb car... you two would of been neck and neck if he was N/A....turbo'd he should of kicked your ass.

i agree soccer is not gay because it is the most played sport in the world and i had many friends that played.

congrats on your kill.

but honestly dude, your friend sucks at driving and a stock e30 325is will beat your car.

honestly, im frightened by some of those rice rockets..lol

and you should be. your car runs high 15's at the track or 16's but IMO you shouldnt race your car unless you really know you have a chance.

but with a nice auto e46 like yours, id go straight vip with some nice coilovers and rims and go for looks.

i feel ya man, and honestly, if i wasnt forced to follow the team tradition, i wouldnt race anyone (atleast not until i know i can smoke them without getting caught)

and i just cant part with my rims.. it has the more attractive 17" rims that come with the sport package and it would be a shame to see them not being used :(

although some 19" bbs rims with some low profile wheels wouldnt be bad ;)
