View Full Version : 02 Dinan M5
dinanm5 12-11-2007, 12:12 AM Hey I am new to the whole forum thing. I currently have a white Dinan 02 BMW M5. I have Dinan exhaust, cold air intakes, all new brembo rotors and calipers my most recent addition was dinan suspension with front and rear strut braces. Obviously i have the most recent software. I FINALLY GOT approved by dinan and just got my badge!!! (pics soon to come) My question for you guys is what should i do next under 5 grand????
Stack24 12-11-2007, 12:16 AM Your next step will be......Give me all your parts :)
dinan e39 12-11-2007, 12:25 AM driving school.
e39dream 12-11-2007, 12:25 AM a white dinan M5 sounds fun. If you are already setup and well maintained I see no reason not to supercharge it. Look up CA automotive- they do a twin SC kit for the e39 M5. Tell them I sent you, might give you a break.
Is it under 5k? I doubt it, but it's going to be the best bang for the buck.
dinanm5 12-11-2007, 12:27 AM Been to many to get qualified for track racing.
FP5241 12-11-2007, 12:43 AM The first thing you should do is post 20 posts so you can post pics!!!!!!!!
:D
dinan e39 12-11-2007, 12:48 AM go with velocity stacks or full collection headers.
Buildscharacter 12-11-2007, 12:53 AM I agree with above...20 posts is necessary...I want to see some car porn on the double! :)
dinanm5 12-11-2007, 12:56 AM I will take pictures this week. All i have currently are the pics of the car stock....
Fiziks 12-11-2007, 02:04 AM go with velocity stacks or full collection headers.

im lovin the stock molding im about to switch!!!
PutterMcGavin 12-11-2007, 01:01 PM Welcome to the Dinan "family!" I have a Dinan Stage 5 540i/6 which isn't exactly a Dinan M5 but I love it nonetheless! Personally I love the products I have on my car and can definately tell a difference from stock! Keep it up...

+2 Supersprint headers suppossedly increase power by roughly 30rwhp and 24lbs of torque.
I think they run roughly $3k. You might want ot consider the SS cats as well but after those and installation you'll definately be over your $5k mark. If you're a good (and confident) DIY'er then you can probably do it yourself if you have ALL of the right parts, but it will probably be best to pay somebody...
dinanm5 12-11-2007, 03:24 PM So i guess everyone is saying headers first. I was personally leaning towards a diff or cams. But i like the header idea. Second how do i post pictures on this thing???? 20 posts?

yes, get 20 posts, then come back with pictures.
p.s. welcome to the boards!

dinanm5 12-11-2007, 06:06 PM well i have come to the conclusion that i am def doing dinan headers with a dinan dif. Thanks for the help pics soon to come!
JackEatsEmoKids 12-11-2007, 06:17 PM Dinan parts are GARBAGE =)
None the less, white M5 is the ticket. Get pictures already!
Stack24 12-11-2007, 06:22 PM im lovin the stock molding im about to switch!!!
Are you talking about the black trim on the car? Yeah I really like the contrast of it. I really like your clean look as well.

Good call on the headers. Dinan makes some good ones but I think Super-Sprint would be the ticket. They have a full system of compatible units including the headers, cats, downpipes, connectors, etc.
The diff would be a nice upgrade as well. A 3.46 would be what you should look for...

Well they've helped my 5'er beceome pretty quick. There is a reason why I can inch away from my friend's SC'ed '99 M3 putting down 296 RWHP ;) Don't really know anybody else who makes a larger MAF and TB either. I'm not a Dinan fanboi as I think all of their stuff is overpriced but I think they do make pretty good products (for the record I only bought ONE thing directly fron Dinan, the s/w which was half off).

I've deeply anazlized thier products with a co worker. Thier intakes..no where near worth the money for some pipes and a name. The throttle bodies...they are ported what 1mm or 2 larger? and stamped a stock throttle plate with the name Dinan, it really isn't larger persay on the throttle plate where it counts. That whole rear section exhuast for a minum of what 800 dollars? I can have one tig welded from the exh mani fold back with high quality Borla mufflers and good resonators for the same price, get a better sound and it's a full exhuast.
But it's my $0.02, it's justifiable to spend so much money for such minimal power gains. Just like a VF supercharger for my 5, 5G's for only 265 WHP? My Isuzu truck puts more than that to the gound, like double. I can turbo my 5 and put down 500 and change reliably for a few grand more that I wish I had.
I've been fabricating my own reliable parts for years now for friends cars and my own for 1/4 of the price and look just as good, if not better.

That's just a taste of my insanity as of now, I'm redoing that setup. here's how it looked before
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c10/JDM_Isuzu/truck021.jpg...my 5er should be just as sick if i can save up. BTW, I do all that out of my back yard.
But I'm not cutting down Dinan, just it's not worth the money for a stuipd guys name...I remember when thier intakes where 500 dollars and made of Carbon fiber, that was kinda worth it. but now...some painted pipe for that much is a joke.

diff makes a noticable difference. Cams not really. Headers definately. Throttle bodies definately as well. I have done all of the above on my m5. Diff makes a nice seat of the pants improvement, headers are worth an honest 30 hp at the wheels. Same with throttle bodies and dinan's velocity stacks. Cams are only worth about 10-12 hp, but the labor is pretty large, and would possibly break the $5k budget.
If you have 5k to spend, i'd do the diff and try to stretch for supersprint headers (which are decent, and cheaper).

See, all that money isn't worth the HP gains....HPF's is coming out with a twin turbo kit for the M5's soon...save and get some real bang for the buck.
azaytsev 12-11-2007, 11:25 PM 1. differential
2. ss headers
3. ss x-pipe

Whoa there bud...
I wasn't attacking what you said and in fact I agree with you about the fact that Dinan's items are over priced (read my post again...). Would I ever buy from Dinan at full price, heck no! I don't have that kind of money! I've let others take the hit on these items and have picked them up off fleabay and elsewhere...
Are the products justfied for what I've spent? HECK YES!
TB: $300 shipped (bored out for and 8% increase FYI)
MAF and CAI: $400 shipped
SW: $300
Intake Mani: Pre-VANOS manifold $100 (same as Dinan's)
Also, I'm not running the Dinan exhaust. I'm running "run of the mill" Magnaflow 14816 which I love! How much installed you ask? $140...
So I'm what $1200-1400 bucks in for about 40hp and the products happen to be Dinan? ~$30/hp...an S/C system for these run $6000 for what 125'ish hp? Which is what, $49/hp...not a bad return right there...
I know there is always a "better" way to do things out there and you sound quite resourceful yourself which is what I too try to be. However many do not have access to the knowledge and materials available that you have (not to mention the patience) and find it easier to buy something that is proven and has shown to work. That just makes it better for those of us who aren't willing to pay for the markups...
So in closing, Dinan products are NOT junk but their attitude and absurb prices are. I agree with you about most things but just because they jack their prices doesn't mean that it is bad stuff. Anything worth consideration for our cars will be pricey, that is a given. You just need to be smart. You gotta pay to play...
Turbos for the 6's have been proven and are GREAT. The 532i I believe...However they are absurdly priced for the V8 5's and I don't even think that a turbo exists (tuning issues...)

worth is a relative term. Yes, it was worth it to me. Who else had a package for the e39 m5 5 years ago when i bought it and wanted to do this? I'm happy with my 480-something hp (dyno'd over 400whp) naturally aspirated m5. If i had waited for the hpf kit, whoever they are, i'd have an 8 year old 120k mile M5, rather than having the best daily driver i've ever had, and enjoying it for all of these years.
There have been a handful of people on the m5 board saying "oh, just wait until xx gets their turbo/sc on the market, 650 streetable hp for a third of dinan's price." Well, i'm waiting, hasn't happened yet, and if it does in another year or two, i really don't care anymore, it's an old car and my interests have moved on.
dinanm5 12-12-2007, 09:20 AM Dinan products are the only company that doesnt void my warranty, i am stuck using dinan products til july 08. I will try and do the photos tonight..
smooth6 12-12-2007, 02:29 PM have lots of time on your hands and can install your stuff then, we applaud you. If you don't have the time nor the inclination to diy then you have to be prepared to spend a few dollars more to get what you want.
I agree that 5-6 years ago, there were not many safe options for upgrading the E39 except Dinan and RD. In the intervening years, a number of other vialble and less expensive options have come on-line and are as effective or better.
This is an "enthusiasts" web site - enthusiasts aren't always reasonable when it comes to their area of interest!!
E39 M Power 12-12-2007, 02:29 PM BBS LMs or Dinan wheels.
Armo95 12-12-2007, 02:38 PM Headers + software (probably will hit 5 grand or a bit more)
OR
Gears
Then you can save up for the headers + software combo (best bang for the buck on this motor).
BlackSapphire 12-12-2007, 02:54 PM Nitrous..... keep it at a 75 shot. :)
Or.... get with Franka for some go-go ware.

Wasn't jumping on you, sorry if the post seemed harsh. I'm just getting sick of over priced names and people buying into them, but to each his own, I'd like a stock looking Mom's 5er with 700HP and smoke 90% of the people at the track and the street. but I also want a well blanced vehicle.
As for you set up, that is the best bang for the buck that've spent. I know Dinan products are top notch, but sometimes they simply don't perform for the money.
I plan to turbo my M54, and all that excusses from these companys about tunning, they just simply don't want to put in the effort to think. If AEM's EMS controls an S54 and reliably...it can reliably do any BMW engine.
Sorry again for making that post seem bashing towards you. It wasn't meant in that way.
dirrtybirdy 12-12-2007, 09:12 PM id love to see pictures of your car
dinanm5 12-12-2007, 10:10 PM ok i got the pictures now how do i upload them?
dinanm5 12-12-2007, 10:40 PM Also as a reply to all you dinan "haters" I am only going to use dinan products because i want to maintain my current system of having a true dinan M5. I am sure there are other companies out there that make products of equal or greater value/performance but unless its wheels i am sticking with dinan. (for this car that is) I appreciate all the feedback and you all have been extremely helpful. At this point i am going to go with the headers and possible the diff at the same time. What do you guys think? Also come may this car will be up for sale....

12CoolDude 12-13-2007, 01:32 AM DIBS on the rear diff when you get the Dinan installed...LOL. Didn't read all the posts but am betting too little, too late?
dinanm5 12-13-2007, 03:08 AM i think we can work something out 12cool
Stack24 12-13-2007, 03:44 AM If you don't mind me asking why are you gonna put some more into it if you are planning to sell it in May?
Are you gonna try and sell as is or remove it and make it stock at which point I will call dibs on anything I want off your car :D

No problem I didn't take it personally.
When you're on this forum long enough you realized that everybody is opinionated and everybody is always right...:stickoutt

:mad ... 2nd! I'm to the point now where I REALLY am craving a diff. Kind of ridiculous that anything north of 1500 RPM in first will fry the rears and coming through a corner isn't too much fun either...
dinanm5 12-13-2007, 06:31 PM Because i want my car to be done. Its a project for me, and when its complete i will sell it.
