I'm running Mobil 0w-40 all year round, and that covers me up here for temp swings from -40 to +40 Celcius.

Changing to a lower upper value, doesn't really do anything for cold winter temps. The upper value relates to the viscosity when the oil is hot. For protection when the temperature/oil is cold, it's the lower number that's the important one.

5w30 castrol synthetic for mine, year round.

We get a pretty tame winter compared to some places as far as low temps.

Area is under an ice advisory tonight from 2 am to midnight tomorrow. Supposedly a 1/2" of frozen water is to blanket everything. Always fun when you have to drive 2.5 hrs to Dixon, IL tomorrow... in a ford 2wd truck. If we get that ice I'm calling off, for sure. /weather update

With newer engines and their tight tollerances, and especially with synthetic oils, most of the time a single grade will cover all the temps that engine is likely to see. Changing viscosities was much more important on older engines. For example my e30 used to be quite a juggling act with oils. Summer was 20w50 spring and fall was 10w40 and dead of winter was 5w30. No longer the case with the 540.

The outside temperature does not affect a significant affect on the viscosity of synthetic oil so I ride with the same oil year round.

DITTO. It is even specified in the owners manual and other BMW material (and on the label under the hood usually found at the front center)...that the use of "special oils" (meaning synthetics)...the temperature range allows the use of one weight all year.

I was in San Diego UTC area last week for training. Beautiful weather until the rain hit on Friday. Flew back to Sacramento Friday night and Burrrrr...COLD.

I've thought about changing viscosity since we'll see temperatures in the teens starting around January; but most people I've spoke to up here say I shouldn't have to worry about it. Hopefully my truck will be fixed before long so I can keep my e39 in the garage during the cold months anyways...

My gf and I laugh because if it's 58 we put on our P-coats, scarfs, multiple layers, hats, and walk around with white chocolate mochas like's it's negative 50 outside :rofl

I run Mobil 1 0w40 all year long. I brought up this question because I know some may think about it this time of year. It's good to know that oil and engines have come such a long way. One weight all year long :buttrock

Ok, how's this? Salt Lake City, 105 in the summer, very possible to see -20 in the winter, especially if you like to ski.

I visited a Detroit Diesel remanufacturing facility near here a couple of years ago with a group of Boy Scouts. It was fascinating! (Have you ever held two machined pieces in your hand that have a tolerance of one millionth of an inch? I did, old mechanical injectors are that way) I was especially surprised to see the oil reccomendations on a newly remaned Diesel; 15W-40 conventional or 10W-30 synthetic. Evidently they feel that the protection from the lighter synthetic is equal to or greater than the heavier conventional oil.

Gawd, I love living here. It's paradise. There's a whole other world out there though. I've see it on CNN. A world where people shiver, filled with cool breezes and even places where the water freezes. Outside, I mean! Oh, those poor people, their poor cars. Rusty Bimmers. So sad. Makes me want to wash my car just thinking about it. Sigh. I so love San Deigo.
