Help I need new struts looking to handle corners but not sacrifice the ride. (wife drives the car too) Sport springs aren't out of the question what combo do you guys like.
Next is difficulty of doing the job in my garage I have tools and skills but the mechanic that had worked on the car before I got it has put some crazy mojo in my head that only BMW trained peeps should attempt this repair.
And he wants 1200.00
Any advice.

Changing your struts or shocks is not a $1200 job. I've personally done it in my garage with my dad and it wasn't too bad. as long as you have the appropriate tools (especially a spring compressor) it is definitely do-able. It just mostly takes patience rather than mechanical skill

Please search before posting a question that's asked several times a week.

If you're reasonably competent, it's a DIY. I'ven't done it myself, but everyone I know with aftermarket springs and shocks did it themselves.

Your mechanic is full of it.

I was asking for advice on my car not how to use the forum

I think that came out a bit harsher than intended. Nevertheless, if you don't obey the forum rules, most of which are there for a reason, you're going to get unsolicited reminders of them. As for advice on the car...it's DIY-able if you're reasonably competent and know what to do. The latter would probably be helped by reading the Bentley repair manual (http://download.yousendit.com/186540C43BFC5958). e34net (http://www.bmwe34.net) is a similarly valuable resource.

tjar66 - I am about to do this in my garage as soon as my parts come in. The spring compressors can usually be borrowed or rented from any decent parts store...i.e. autozone, checkers, etc. I am also replacing all control arms, tierods, swaybar links, etc. Moroza is right about there being a lot of online help with this procedure...e34net has pretty easy to follow instructions.
