I like the sound of the 540's v8 to begin with, but I know that chunky factory exhaust is holding back some power and lots of sound. If anybody who has heard or has a 540 with an aftermarket exhaust and likes the way it sounds let me know what system you have. I have a couple manufacturers in mind but im still undecided. Oh and im looking for something under $1000 aka no eisenmann. Thanks!

hi, i have a 530i and its pretty close enough to the 540. should sound close or even the same. i got a custom exhaust put in and deleted the resonator. from the cats to the muffler its all new. i bought a magnaflow muffler # 15815 off ebay for about 130$, and then i took the car to a custom shop. they charged me about 350$ to install and for parts and pipes too. so from the original cats. there is a Y-pipe and the to a single pipe to the new magnaflow muffler. it sounds great! i really love it, and it sounds like a v8. its not harsh loud, but its pretty loud. becareful if you live in a conservative area. i already have my run in with the law... anyways. i have a vid on youtube. you can check it out, it doesn't quite sound like the vid. the exhaust was too close to the mic on the camera so the quality is not that good, but for less than 500$ or just 500$ i got this system, and i love it.

Isnt that a 14815? 15815's are a Mustang exhaust.

I got a shop to install a Magnaflow #14833 muffler and 2.5" single straight-piping on my 540i. I also got them to take the resonator out so that the noise would be much more existent - and believe me, it is :evil2

I made the mistake of telling them to cut my cats off and replacing it with straight-pipe; I lost a shit-ton of low-end torque because of it. And by that, I mean it was literally IMPOSSIBLE to spin the wheels off the line... I would have needed rain + oily roads for that to even be thought possible. It felt like I was driving with the e-brake on for the entire duration of 600-3200RPM, in any gear.

I finally got a Magnaflow Highflow cat put on there to regain some of the lost torque, and it's helped out a lot. Although, I think I'm still missing around 10-15% of my original torque; so says the butt-dyno.

Nevertheless, here's a vid of some idling + revving of the setup that I have on my car. NOTE: I shot this video when I had no cats, and putting a single cat on there has greatly decreased the amount of rasp when the RPM goes down, as you can hear in the vid.

the muffler i use is pretty much liek a straight pipe. there are no chambers or anything. it just changes the tone, and it sounds great! the muffler is like a free flow.
