i may have the oppurtunity to buy a 1978 320i at a fairly reasonable price and i was just wondering what all is interchangeable and an upgrade for my 1074 bmw 2002? it has the M10 with fuel injection and a 5 speed manual both of which are obviously upgrades, but is any of the suspension/brakes interchangeable and if so would they be an upgrade? and i thought i read somewhere that is is a wider body but i maybe be wrong so is the rearend a possible upgrade or not? and even if it is interchangeable, i have LSD in my 2002 now anyways so is there any difference in the LSDs or not? i know this probably seems like a pretty basic question to most of you out there but im fairly new to BMW's so any help would be great!

The fuel injection from the 320i is a little bit more modern(i guess).

I like the hall effect distributor so you dont have to worry about keeping the points all good.

A '78 doesn't have the electronic distributor, it wouldn't work in an '02 if it did have it unless you change the cam, and it's not hall effect in the first place. (thats 3 strikes, dustbunny lol)

The fuel injection pretty much sucks and you'll forever regret it if you do that "upgrade". The trans should be a 4 spd, but maybe someone put in a 5 and that would be awesome for your '02.
If you have a LSD you already have a 320i diff in your car. So yes it can fit but the 78 has a 3.64 non-LSD and you don't want that in there. But then again if the trans was changed theres a good chance the diff was too.
The rear brakes are commonly fitted to 2002s, they're a little bigger/better. The fronts are not any better but I think you do need the 320i hubs to complete some 2002 brake upgrades. All of the brake stuff is very well documented so you should have no trouble finding out what you need to know.
