I started to take the headliner out of my e28 and discovered sewn loops on the headliner cloth with metal rods going from one side to the other to support the headliner cloth. I wasn't ready for this curve ball. How do I replace the cloth? Does someone sell precut and looped headliners? PLEASE HELP!!!. Thanks- Curtis

Curtis,
The looped headliners are definately tricky on the older models, fortunately BMW is not the only manufacturer to have used that system. The following link shows a step by step procedure for replacement:

You will still have to pull the windshields and interior components, but if you have a wife that can sew, a son that can get the cloth, and another son who can help with the install, you should be all set.

You can still get some headliners from Mobile Tradition (http://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com/)
Check under 51 vehicle trim and then 51 55 interior body trim panel. Does yours have a sunroof?
