My 2000 740I would not start this morning. I put the key in the ignition and went to start it, but the key won't turn at all. I turned the steering wheel to see if it was locked, but that didn't get it. I spent 10 minutes messing with it and it never turned. Could it be that the anti theft doesn't recognize my key anymore? Thanks

The only time my 7 has ever done that was when the steering wheel was turned enough to be locked.. but you stated you checked that.. I know on my 98 it will still turn even if the transponder is not operating correctly.

I had that happen to me the other day and was going to post. After cussing for a few minutes, I tried again and it started but I had to reprogram the date time etc. I still dont know why nothing happened when I turned the ignition.

It sounds like you may have 2 different issues. I problem with your ignition lock cylinder (barrel)...and possibly a weak battery.

Have you checked your battery? Have you unlocked the OBC to and run a TEST #9 to see what your battery voltage is? Or do you have a multimeter to check it with?

An ignition switch that won't turn is NOT part of any modern BMW anti-theft features...in fact its the opposite. If someone tries to "jimmy" your door lock or ignition with something other than the key...the cylinder will spin freely 360 degrees.

Not sure, but.....did you put your foot on the brake before trying to turn the key. On some cars, if you don't have your foot on the brake, the key will not turn.
