View Full Version : 2002tii - Hot or Not
Long6 12-03-2007, 09:39 AM Hello everybody
This is Gustav, located in Europe and I would like to ask some information on my winter project.
I found this 2002tii mod 1973 in Germany and the owner claims that it has some 131 ps.
The car has no rust (checked that) and the interior seems to be in good condition.
The engine is working well – no hesitation during acceleration and good idle revving.
Cables are in good condition and the suspension is some sort of Koni after market.
The price is 7.200 euros and I think it is a good deal for the car.
I know the pictures I provide are pathetic, but could you please spot anything that doesn’t feel right to you?
Any mismatches any irregularities?
Thank you in advance

dzlnitro 12-03-2007, 09:52 AM 7200 euros...roughly what 10k US? Tii is worth more, that is a beautiful car with a great shine, Im thinking that car is worth around 7or 8k US but i have no idea what the european market is like for these cars.
Long6 12-03-2007, 10:11 AM Thats not a typical price for a tii .(they have become quite rare nowdays)
What puzzles me is that the exchaust pipe is at a totally wrond place (well this could be due to rust etc) and that the car is sitting very high from the ground.
Looks very clean and cheap and that is what worries me.
heres another one at about the same price... a 150ps Ti with some issues on the paint.
Good racing history though...
Should I go for that?
i don't know the first one is 2good2b true.

2many02s 12-03-2007, 12:22 PM A euro 73 with late tail lights Have you driven it? take it out run it hard for a few miles see what you think. same with the ti. ti is even more rare than the tii. If it's a real one. I'd jump on either one.
TimNC 12-03-2007, 02:28 PM Car appears to be sitting high due to oversized tires, imo...and the Koni suspension parts may be contributing. As info. US tii with square tail lights would have been made in '74 only...'73 US model would have had round tail lights. Europe may have been different. $7,200 Euros = approx. $10,000 as noted above. $10k (+/-) will get you a very nice tii in the US if you are patient...and the car you are looking at appears to be a good shape. It was noted above that tii's, with engine in original and good working order are getting hard to find, and that is correct. As for whether to purchase or not, there are two ways to go...buy something in good mechanical, structural and cosmetic shape and spend more on the front end...or buy something that is in need of help and spend as much or more on the tail end. I did the latter because I like to restore cars, but if you count my time (at half the going mechanics' rate) I have over $10,000 in my '76, non-tii 02. Great little cars...good luck.
Long6 12-03-2007, 04:10 PM Thank you very much for your replies and attention.
TimNc we think alike but for this project I do not have so much time as I will be in this location for less than a year and it would be really inconvenient for me to move an unfinished project to some other country.
You guys wouldnt mind me popping in for some more info?
thanks a lot.
Gustav
Long6 12-04-2007, 03:33 AM Ok.
I talked to a classic car agent yesterday and he located a 2002 in Italy
Car was registered there with the old Italian plates (still carries them) It is a one owner car, has a very good service record and reason for selling is that the original owner departed.
Price is 9.000 euros negotiable.
I think this is the one for me.
I will be flying to Italy this Friday, (250 euros for tickets added to the price along with some 600 euros for transportation if the deal is done).
I really need your help here.
I will be all alone at this, so ANY information or advice will be very usefull.
The dealer claims that there is no rust, the car drives and works fine and that it is in perfect compliance with emissions etc.
I have spent the whole night reading and printing advice from this forum, so I think I will be prepared.
Wish me luck.

teutonmobile 12-04-2007, 10:23 PM That's a very straight looking tii in Italy.
Before you start the motor, put the washer bottle back in its bracket!!
The interior looks good, if a little grubby but it will clean up nice. Same to say about the engine-bay, a little grubby.
Campagnolos are hard to come by here in Australia, dont know about Europe, but they certainly add to the appeal.
Looks like its keeping good company at that dealer with a Fiat 124 CS, a Topolino and a Lancia Fulvia Berlina too at the edge of the picture!!
Good luck!
RandyMolson 12-05-2007, 12:22 AM Damn, I would go with the Ti, hands down. I am not an expert on the Euro market, but it is my understanding that Tis are more common in Europe than Tiis. The Ti could not be sold in the US because it did not meet federal emissions standards, so the Tii was sold in the US while the higher-HP Ti was sold in Europe. Bear in mind that Ti parts will be more readily available in Euro than Tii parts for the same reason. So besides higher HP and better parts availability, if you are a US expat, this will be a rare chance in your life to actually own a Ti. Good luck finding one stateside.
Please double check my factoids with a European though. You can probably get good local advice here: http://www.kfz-kultur.de/
2many02s 12-05-2007, 10:10 AM Grubby may be a good thing. oil stains under the car another thing all together. Check all the typical rust areas, make sure you get to cold start the car. Don't let them warm it up for you. Then I'd take a leisurely cruise both through town. Stop and go traffic, and then on the highway for some high speed, tear ass, lane changing life experience. that way you can give it a good once over.
Long6 12-06-2007, 05:58 PM Damn,I can't wait to get my hands on that car.
Friday is the day.
I guess -if- and i quote that, I buy it, i will try to drive it back to Luxemburg.
Why not?
-early 40's crisis-
Thanks guys. In a few hours i will be on my way to the airport. Hope I get some sleep.
bluedevils 12-06-2007, 10:50 PM If I were you, I would try to buy both of them, it is just money. I will write an open check for the ti though.
Long6 12-11-2007, 06:26 AM The little bastard arrived home today.
All it needs is detailing.
I am really happy.
2many02s 12-11-2007, 09:08 AM Congrats! which one did you get? the tii?
Long6 12-11-2007, 09:30 AM Thanks.
Yes the Tii.
The dealer was a real gentleman and OMG did he have a collection of some beauties.
the trip to Italy was definately worthed.
The car is in perfect shape and there was a very big surprise waiting for me...
a 5-speed ZF in a box... (I think that the dealer had it deliberately there so I feel the urge to have it).
Will post more pics soon...
tommozza 12-11-2007, 10:24 AM 5 speed ZF? I thought ZF made the Auto transmissions and steering boxes while Getrag made the 5 speeds... If you got a 5 speed close ratio getrag, consider yourself lucky!
Anyway, i could be wrong haha. Congrats on the purchase though! It looks like a beauty!
Tom
Long6 12-11-2007, 10:44 AM I know nothing about that.
What he told me is that this is a 5speed ZF transmission for this car.
Some more info please?
Long6 12-11-2007, 11:26 AM Just called the guy, although his English is very poor he insists it is a 5 speed Zf, the one that was an option for the tii and the turbo also called the leg of the dog (is he pulling my leg?)
Advice please.
I will call him back tomorow (we have hour lag)
2many02s 12-11-2007, 04:28 PM dog leg yes i had one in my turbo fun but i prefer the one out of a 320

Ok, its a Getrag close ratio with dog leg first gearbox. Quite sought after and not easy to get a hold of. You could sell it for a tidy sum.

Really? I got it for 500 euros.
That crazy Italian said its supposed to be the uber conversion for the tii.
(besides that he had only Italian cars at the showroom and probably -most likely- knows sh!t about BMW).
does it write anything anywhere so I can be sure about it?
I think it will arrive today tops tommorow (could not be sent over with the truck that brought me the car and is comming in a box).
2many02s 12-12-2007, 09:59 AM if it isn't smashed up inside. 1st to second goes in them. You can get 1500.00 US for them maybe even more.

nos hit !!!
looks like
a - I got myself a good bargain
b- the guy really has no idea of what he sold me
c- it is broken - but given the condition of the car i bought it probably isn noy
D- all of the above
now i am really anxious to open that box when it arrives.
P.S. Everyone that has seen the car thinks it is a bargain and even a local mechanic said that.
thank you guys you keep making my days
pchamaa 12-14-2007, 02:43 AM The dog leg tranny is a close ratio with a 1:1 5th gear. Great to keep an engine at the sweet spot of the powerband, not so great for cruising.
I know some guys that would give up their left nut for one of those.

It is a Getrag indeed.
Had the thing installed and it really improves the ride.
Only problem is that it sometimes -bumps- 3rd gear.
My mechanic says that he should open it but I can recall the same issue at an Alfa Romeo a friend had and it was just a small V shaped part under the knob.
Any ideas anyone?
I think that it is a pitty to practically dismantle the car again for such a reason:help
