Just wondering if anyone else had this issue with their e36 and how they managed to fix it? Whenever I start up the car after it has been sitting for awhile IE: over night and after a day of college. It starts up rough and it stutters and almost dies 4-5 times and then it smooths out but the revs are higher then normal at idle. Then when driving off the car doesn't smoothly accelerate when you have the throttle in the same position, rather it surges and weakens, surges and weakens, until the car has fullly warmed up all the way.

It is annoying and makes me worry that there is a bigger problem afoot?

:help :mad

Fuel-pressure problem? As stated- spark plugs... For that matter, a level-1 tune may be in order.

Also check the muffler bearings... Those can be a real nightmare.

I have the almost exact same problem. My shit almost dies for the first 5-10 seconds, then, it idles real rough until at normal operating temp. The only difference between my problem and yours is that it continues to surge and weaken even after it's warmed up all the way. And now, I have even bigger problems after last night. On that note, first person to make my car "disappear" gets 10% of the insurance money that I get.

Just dump it in the lake.

Oh wait. That's not a good plan anymore.

Sorry, no good ideas this morning.

I had this problem. Maybe you might want to consider changing oil brand/weight?? Mine was weather/oil related. It only did it in the summer with x oil. She cranks fine right now with 121k.

hhmmm well the shop my dad took it to after we had initially bought it said that it was and old engine and dumped 20w40 into it! i've been meaning to change it to 10w30, do you think that would make a big difference?. I will try changing the sparkplugs also. Muffler bearings what is that? lol idk what that is haha, and the ICV i can try cleaning that but i remember reading somewhere that is not the problem, any other ideas? :)
