View Full Version : How do I check for CEL stored code

The CEL on my 94 740 (E32) came on once and the car died!!! Luckily, I was just leaving my neighborhood. I turned the ignition to off, then, re-started just fine.

On another occasion, I've noticed that the CEL came on very dim when I was driving at around 45mph, then the CEL light turned off. It was only like a split second.

I would like to rectify this problem BEFORE it gets worse.

First thing's first...How do I check for CEL stored codes? I need to know what is stored before I go hunting for bad sensors or connections. Obviously, this car does not have the OBDII where you can just get a scanner at AutoZone to get it read. Thanks.

You need to bring it to an indy or dealership. Bring it to an indy if you can, they probably won't charge for a diagnosis.

either click the search link here and type in "stomp test"...or go to www.e38.org/e32 and do a page search [Cntrl+F] and type "stomp test"

The OBD I BMWs are able to retreive the codes by performing the stomp test. Follow the instructions to the "T"...and give a couple of tries before giving up. This procedure is similar to the emergency unlock procedure (many give up and wave a white flag too early).

on my website below under
Procedure for Acquiring Flash Codes from your BMW (Stomp-Test)

check the battery and the generator charging, could be low voltage. Test # 9 on the unlocked OBC

Forgot the unlocking procedure, hidden OBC functions

What is the OBDI stomp test? Is there any other way to check for CEL codes, like the old school way of shorting a connector then couting the CEL blinks?

did you read the links posted by shogun and QSilver7? should be plenty enough to explain what/how, etc. for the stomp test!!

Alright...I did the stomp test and all I got was 1216 (TPS). It came out like 33 times-same code. I guess I do not have any other codes stored. This makes sense because my idle would be ok one day and kinda erratic the next. Hmmmm, now to clear it. I waited for the the 1000 code to appear but it just kept repeating the same 1216 code. When do I stomp the gas pedal again to clear this code? Should it be the 2.5 seconds separation between the flashing of codes? If so, 10 seconds, right?

Did you download the PDF file from shogun's site that gives ALL of the info on how to retrieve the codes, what the codes mean, what to do to fix the problem, and how to reset the system??

All of your questions are answered already...take another look at the info...look under BMW MOTRONIC (Pedal) FAULT CODES...instructions on resetting are there...as well as an explanation and fix for code 1216. This is a PDF file that you can download straight to your computer and print out if need be for all future references: http://www.europeantransmissions.com/Bulletin/DTC.BMW/bmwcod.pdf

Good luck. :)

I already know what the code is (1216-TPS)! However, what I am having a hard time on is I get the same code over AND over again. It came up like 33 times with 1 stomp test! The instructions I read states that code 1000 (end of code retrieval) should come up then, stomp and hold again for another 10 seconds. My question is: Is the 1000 code in between the 1216 codes that I am getting? Is this where I stomp and hold for 10 seconds? Thanks.
