I have removed the instrument cluster from my 84 528e. Now I can't figure out which wires go where. I am concerned with a group of wires that connect to the PLUS, O2, MASS, TEMPO section of the cluster. These are 2 small "clip" like plugs that slide onto exposed fingers on a circuit board.

Unfortunately, I also beleive one of these connectors has come apart and a wire(2) are no longer in it's plastic "holder.

Here is what I know.

Connector 1 - White Plastic Shell
1 Blue and White wire

Connector 2 - Blue Plastic Shell
1 Blue and Brown wire

Misc Wire - Two Blue and Yellow (sort of lime yellow) wires joined together.
I believe this belongs in either connector 1 or connector 2.

I would appreciate any guidance. I'm having a heck of a time getting at the connectors at the same time I'm installing the instrument cluster, but that's another problem

Thanks for any help.

If you look at the back of the cluster, it's all labeled.

Blau = Blue
Weiss = White

As for the missing wires, you'll need an ETM to sort that out. They don't pull apart very easily, how'd you manage that? I don't recall if that goes in either of the connectors or not. Those connectors supply signals for two things though.

TEMPO = speed signal to cruise control and OBC

O2 = mileage signal to the resettable O2 light counter that makes the "O2 sensor" light on the check panel turn on. Leave it disconnected.

Neither of these are absolutely critical for making the car run.

Thanks. The color coding makes sense. I firmly believe that the mystery wires came from 1 of the 2 connectors. It is a blade, F shaped, which fits perfectly in the connector. I just don't know which one. I have looked through the ETM, but I can't find a mention of BLU/YEL wires in the SI discussion.

Anyway the color advise alone has help much.

Blue and yellow looks to be coming from the transmission range display on the bottom of the instrument cluster with one split off to the idle speed control.
page 42 of [e28_84.pdf] Lights:Dash/Transmission.
I don't have one tore apart at this time, so that's the best I can figure.

Here what I was able to figure out (with online help).:

Blue (Blau) Connector (C8) has two sets of wires, the BL/YL wire and the BL/BR wire (for the cruise control - Tempo).

White ( Weiss) Connector (C3), a single BL/WH wire for the O2 sensor.
