I bought a used 99 323is about a week ago. Everything, as far as I can tell, is in tip top shape. Rotors and Pads were replaced, the car was given a full service, inspection passed out 100%.

The second day I noticed a slight scratching sound followed by some clunking/clanking on the right hand side of the vehicle. At first I thought something had come loose on one of the wheels or that the fuel door was open. I naturally stopped on the shoulder, shut the car down and proceeded to walk around, look under and examine it as best as my untrained eye can. I could not find anything out of place. So I just guessed it was the new brake pads being worn in or something. Next day, same thing happens again.

By this time, ive began to notice that these sounds usually occur at the 40mph-50mph mark. After 50, the sounds stop and the car is perfect in every way possible. I tried to check if it could have possibly been the clutch, but I didnt feel anything wrong with it after driving 50 miles. I took it back to the dealer, but when he drove it - it didnt make a noise whatsoever. So he couldnt tell me what to do except to get it checked out by a tech.

Honestly, im quite perplexed. I know it feels like its coming from the right hand side (Passenger) of the vehicle. It only happens from 40-50 mph and it only happens sometimes. Its caused me to think that the bumper was loose, that the rotors werent installed right, or the brake pads, or maybe a muffler issue. I just dont know what it is and I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction of thought before I ran out and spent a couple hundred bucks getting every bit of the vehicle analyzed.

There is nothing wrong with the vehicle in terms of stability, ride, motor etc. It feels PERFECT before 40 and after 50 mph.

Any clues?

You might want to have someone put it on a lift and check for something loose. It might be something like a loose heat shield.

Alright, been looking around for a good place that would check out this problem for me. Thanks for your response earlier. Any idea what it could be if it isnt a heat plate?
