I posted this on the general forum, but didn't get much response, so I thought I'd post here. What should my '03 330xi auto be idling at? It's been idling around 700-800rpm but as high as 1000. Is this normal? Will it change in extreme cold (I live in Minnesota)? I did a search but most idle threads were about E36 3-series.
Curious if I might have bad ICV. Thanks for your help.

Your idle speed is fluctuating definitely. Normal idle which depends on several factors should be approximately 650 to 700 rpm. Have the vehicle checked for faults. You might have a bad ICV as you suspect. Look for vacuum or air leaks too. If there are no faults,
re-programming is what a dealer normally recommends (SIB 12 57 06, January 2007).
Regarding the weather, of course cold weather as interpreted by the DME based on readings of the coolant/oil/air temps, could cause slightly high rpm specially during the
initial cold start, but not for long, and without fluctuations.

When I start my car cold, the idle stays at around 800 for at least a few minutes and then even longer if I keep the interior temp and fan speed high. It's weird, it'll stay high till I lower the temp and fan speed.

Yeah, usually if it's cold outside, the DME would set a higher idle. On my car, it's usually around 1000 for the first 2 minutes or so (I rarely let it idle that long cold, though).
Of course, I'm driving a dinosaur compared to you...

Thanks for the advice. It's been at 1000 at the start, and about 800 when warm. I'm going to have the ICV checked.

So I took my car into a BMW shop today and was told that my car is fine, no bad ICV. He recommended I put some Heet in, but that's it. Said it's normal for the idle to be between 700-900 when warmed up, and that a little fluctuation is ok.
I'm going to see what happens...fingers crossed. Thanks for the advice!
