Hi,

I have recently replaced the head on an M40 engine, however it is not starting and I'm trying to see if I have it timed up correctly.

Is there any markings on any covers that I can go off to see if it is timed up correctly as I cannot find any myself and I am using my markings on the cam pulley and crank pulley to time it up, which may be wrong.

Cheers

Finding the TDC for the crankshaft is relatively easy since the crankshaft pulley is supposed to have marks, same thing with the timing cover, or you can use the old method of seeing the topmost travel of the piston no. 1, and then lock the flywheel with a rod inserted in the hole near/beneath the starter.
But timing the camshaft is tricky if you do not have the camshaft holder/locating tool no. 11 31 90. It sets the cam position of cylinder one at the TDC also. You can approximate the full closed position of the valves but it is only an approximation. And when attaching the toothed belt, proper tension is needed.
But it would be all easier if you marked all the geared pulleys at TDC before removing the belts, etc.
