I never saw the CanAm cars race back in their day, but I grew up watching IMSA's GTP and GT series.
I was lucky to be at Road America 3 or 4 years ago for the Brian Redman Invitational CanAm reunion. There were more than 30 significant CanAm/USRRC cars in attendance.
Video doesn't do the cars justice. They're amazing in the flesh.

Can you imagine driving a short wheelbase, 800hp, 1300#, wings as big as barn doors, wheels that are 12x17...that's 12' dia x 17'' wide, and friction shocks!?!?!?!? Those early IOP Shadow car were SICK! I missed seeing the Porche 917's though.......I was there, in '72, Laguna Seca, watching those cars with real drivers......I haven't been the same since.

Its a shame we can't have a "no holds barred" racing series today. Those cars are awesome.

You should see the CanAm and Formula 5000 cars without their bodywork. The drivers had absolutely NO protection - especially around the footbox.
The guys who drove those cars at speed were true heroes.

MX-5 races are always entertaining. I've seen as many as 60 cars on one grid.

The drivers would need g-suits and/or not be able to drive the car at the limit. Cars like that would turn any off track excursion into certain death.

Yeah, its a catch 22. The technology development in the safety realm is huge since the old CanAm cars, but then again, the cars would be so amazing that a mistake could be catastrophic. However, I don't think it would be more dangerous than CanAm was. They were pushing lots of power through inferior materials, friction shocks, etc and the track layouts weren't as well thought out (safety wise) as we have now.
At least now we would have traction control, superior brakes, etc.
Unfortunately Formula1 is becoming more and more a spec series (to a point) and this type of series would drive development.
