View Full Version : 2 liter short block?
t walgamuth 11-29-2007, 08:08 PM Anybody have a good 2 liter short block out there? for sale? a euro would be ideal. rebuildable might work also.
Those 2200 engines offered by metric mechanic are a stroker engine? or just a big bore? do they offer just a short block too?

Rickysbmw320i 11-29-2007, 08:31 PM I have one for you but it is in new hampsure. And am not going to ship it. 81k miles and it needs a new distrubter shaft. It xame from a 1980 323i. Traanny too. Let me know.

t walgamuth 11-29-2007, 08:36 PM Sorry, I was thinking of a four cylinder block.
Besides how am I going to hook up if you aren't willing to ship it?

busemans 11-29-2007, 08:56 PM there was a 2.0 crank on ebay for 20 bucks plus shipping and a spare head for 9 dollars. i imagine if you email the guy (same seller for both) he probably has a block also.
busemans 11-29-2007, 08:58 PM to bad you are so far north. there is a badass bmw junkyard in san antonio texas that would let you have a short block cheap. every time i go up there, i get tons of stuff for free because its a three hour drive for me to go their shop and i call and let them know i'm on my way so they will stay open on saturday
Rickysbmw320i 11-29-2007, 09:35 PM Awe, I also have a 4 cylinder from an 83 bmw too, but that needs rebuilt for sure. I'm in the bay area

charbel 11-29-2007, 10:10 PM i am in michigan. i cee that you are near me. not too close. but if you are interested, i have a good running engine. it is in my orange car now. complete , not only the block.
$350 including everething. exept the trans.
wiring harness and computer ...you can even hear it running and drive the car.
if you don't want the hole thing and you wanna spend some money, i have a 88,000 mile block with B10 pistons, yes euro. almost brand new . but it is not cheap...if you want it. i will for sure ship it for you.
let me know if you are interested. thanks.

So, sorry for my noobie status here, can I just stick a 2.0 crank in my 1980 1.8 engine and use the same pistons and rods?

So will my head just bolt onto any four cylinder block of the era? ...and can I just bolt in the bigger crank and use the fuel injection setup as is? will it run right?

kdanielson 11-30-2007, 12:31 AM To use the 2.0L crank you MUST use 2.0L pistons. Rods are the same. Heads do not always interchange, piston domes can interfere with the wrong head.
1.8L injection works fine on a 2.0L engine but works better with the 2.0L fuel distributor.

theres a good chance the compression height its different on the 2.0
Compression height is the distance of piston pin to the top of the piston. If the rods stay the same theres a good chance the compression height is different

Good chance indeed, so good actually that it is now considered a well known fact.

its a&j's auto parts in von ormy texas. its a little on the south eastern side of san antonio. go past lackland on 10 till you get to 1604 and its the next exit on the left. big blue wooden fence around it. lady runs it with her nephew and son as the pullers. they will let you walk around and look at anything you want and they come pull it for you. they also guarantee parts. tell them that jason, in corpus, with the red bmw sent you and maybe they will give you some free stuff like they do for me and my wife.

this guy has the head and had the crank. you will have to look through his other items to see if he has the crank still though.
kdanielson 11-30-2007, 11:58 PM There is more than a good chance the compression height is different... It IS different!
If the crank centerline to block deck remains the same distance (all m10s are the same unless machined after mfg) and the rod length remains the same (1.8 and 2.0 rods ARE the same) the only way to get the piston top to the block deck level is to change the piston pin to piston top (compression height) distance.
Hope this clears this subject up for the future.

busemans 11-30-2007, 11:58 PM a guy has two engines in tennessee for pick up only for 85 bucks. they are 2002 engines though, not e21
t walgamuth 12-01-2007, 01:30 AM So is the 2002 engine different enough to be a problem for me?
Thanks for the link on the crank. I will check that out.
Tom W
kdanielson 12-01-2007, 11:51 AM It depends on the 2002 engine. A 2.0L engine with flat top pistons will work with your 1.8L head. If the 2.0l pistons are domed they will not work with the 1.8L head. There is a way to make the 2.0L engine (including head without injector holes) work with the 1.8L intake system. Early watercooled vw and some volvos use composite inserts into their intakes to hold the injectors-you can drill your 1.8L intake and epoxy these in place and it will work. The PO of my '82 did that to make the 2.0L head work on the "Frankenstein" engine. It worked ok but they should have been angled towards the ports more than they were.
ken
t walgamuth 12-01-2007, 12:06 PM So you know what compression ratio the flat top pistons with a two liter displacement yeilds?
Thanks for the info.

busemans 12-01-2007, 03:51 PM hey tom, if you want anything looked for on ebay, post it up or pm me and i can look or my wife can look. she finds some badass deals on parts for the cars. she got my mtech2 steering wheel in my e30 for 75 bucks. usually they go for over 200
t walgamuth 12-01-2007, 08:25 PM OK, thanks. Someone offered light rods to me a week or so ago and I am not sure where to find that. So whomever you are I may be in the market for them now or soon.
Tom W
pkbinplano 12-02-2007, 04:13 PM 2.0 crank here $100 plus ship, also have the flat tops but were kissed slightly by the valves but still usable . 1 over sized, have the block also if interested. Block is stripped bare, but includes front/rear cover and crank main caps. that was me on the rods. They sold. went cheap
t walgamuth 12-02-2007, 04:22 PM Thanks. I am still gathering options so it will be a while before I make up my mind.

charbel 12-02-2007, 07:09 PM i will lower the price on mine. i just want it out of here. the other guy haven't talk to me...so i donno
and mine is 2.0 litter not 1.8 with 20,000 miles on it. not 150,000
you will get what you pay for.

If you still have the $350 engine (not the one with the b10 pistons) I am interested. Would you be willing to ship to zip 80911. If so a quote for that would be nice. I was driving around and one of my rods started knocking. I would like to still be able to drive my e21 around while the engine is out being rebuilt. It is very hard to come across a m10 in my area so Im willing to pay shipping as long as it isnt to outrageous. Thanks.
Bryan
t walgamuth 12-04-2007, 09:21 AM I am still evaluating my options so don't feel any obligation toward me. I am not sure how good my e21 is and I might just sell it off instead of trying to run it.
We are having trouble with it running. We replaced the fuel lines and it still just runs a bit then dies. Can a dirty fuel distributor cause that?
Tom W
OLD MAN 12-04-2007, 09:56 AM Replace all the vacuum lines and pull the distributor and make sure the mechanical advance is working.
You need to remember these are 25 plus year old cars - So you should think "everything needs cleaning, lubing and if it is rubber replaced"
Two Saturdays and $100.00 of misc. TLC and your e21 could start to run like it has new life. This things are finicky little machines took me two years to warm up to working on mine and enjoying it, but now I'm hooked.
t walgamuth 12-04-2007, 10:41 AM Thanks, old man. I will check the rubber.

it has to be flat shipping. the engine is in my orange car and it is running fine.
i would love to sell it. i think if you are not fare, it will be cheaper you drive and get it.
let me know. thanks.
busemans 12-04-2007, 07:59 PM he is in colorado so its a bit of a drive
onesimo58 12-05-2007, 03:12 AM I do live in colorado so its a bit far for me to drive. Depending on what shipping is I do want the engine. Im not in to big of a hurry so don't feel rushed.
Ive got a question. When shipping an engine can it be delivered to a residential address, a business address, or do I have to pick it up from a shipping dock? Ive never shipped or received an engine so I have no idea. Thanks.
Low Level 07-15-2008, 10:07 PM -Bumping an old thread-
Anyone have a 2.0L M10 for sale?
Definitely need the crank, pistons, and head. Would prefer to have the whole thing, complete.
