I had the same thing happen. They are available as a new part.

If you want a temporary fix, jam a thumbtack into the gap between the button and surrounding bexel. Worked for me for a about a month. This switch was the cause of non-functional turn signals in my car as it is a tie point for the system.

The dealer wants too much. Is it the same part as the 320i? If so, I can find loads of them at the salvage yard.

I got the button to stay in but it's so sensitive that opening and closing the ashtray will make it pop out.

I have one for a 73. If this works you can have it just pay for shipping.

Take it apart. You need to push in the little tabs on the sides and pull it apart in two pieces. Don't lose the spring when it opens. There is a little arm with a bump that runs through a track. Bend it in slightly and see if that makes it catch better. Worked on mine.
