Looking for a decent used mtn bike for her. She doesn't want a "first" bike to be too expensive, in the event that she doesn't use it as much as expected, and I don't want to get her a Huffy. Anyone selling, or know of anyone selling?

How tall is she?

5'11-ish. I assume something like 18" is what she'll need.

That sounds about right. Keep an eye on CL, you'll find deals there from time to time. Let me know if you want me to eyeball evaluate anything.

Get a decent frame first and foremost. Everything else is upgradeable.

I have too many bikes as it is right now...

I don't live in Athens anymore. I've been too lazy to change the location field. :embarrasm Might be worth the drive though. I didn't think they'd sell used bikes...

A lot of local bike shops have classified boards in the shops. Check 'em out.

How much are you looking to spend? There are several bikes on craigslist for $125 and under.

That'd be perfect on pricing. Any suggestions on what to look at on CL?

Brian (bcart1991) is the bike guy and would know. I just pulled up this link (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/bik/) and saw several for sale.

18" what? BMX bikes are usually 20-26" Peete does downhill so he'd probably be a good guy to talk to.

Everything. :shifty :shifty

18" frame. BMX bikes use 20" wheels, mountain bikes use 26" wheels, and road bikes use 700c wheels (about 29" or some such).

With mountain and road bikes, the frame size has a lot to do with how comfortable (or not) you will be on the bike. With mountain bikes, there is more leeway between what size you should ride and what you are riding. I.e. I should ride a 20" MTB frame, but mine is about 18.5", and I like it just fine.

I'm having some down time at work (my plotter's power supply decided to crap out this week), so hit me up if you want me to check anything out.

You can find some steals on Craigslist, but you can also find some lemons and flat worn-out rides.

Try picking up a few mtn biking magazines, too. An annual buyer's guide issue if you could find one...

Ehh, $150 won't find you a thing.

What the magazines will help with is general knowledge of mtb stuff.

Craigslist is great but you have to know who much the stuff is worht. Lots of wildly overpriced stuff n there just because the ad is free.

Local parks around here. Nothing from a serious trail riding standpoint, hence the reluctance to getting something brand new/extravagant/etc. She's a marathoner that's been told by her doctors to lay off of running and look at something easier on the knees and biking seems to be a good fit.

I'd prefer to go used and get something with a better reputation than buy something cheaper that's new.

^^ That's a good deal, but it looks like it might be a bit small for someone 5'11". Maybe it would work with a pretty long seatpost.

That's a great bet if it fits...

Even if it's not a perfect fit you can make cockpit adjustments...

I had now clue you biked kotter. Where do you normally ride? I'll be back in a week or so and I need to start riding again. I used to be very into biking, but I really dont have the lung capacity anymore. I want to get back into it sometime soon because Im very out of shape .when it warms up in mississippi Im gonna bring my bike out here(no sense in wasting a $1500 bike) and ride the few trails that are here.

I've been a roadie mostly for the past few years. I'll hit a trail now and then.

As long as you have a safe place to keep the bike, any riding is good riding. We didn't have much resembling a hill back in Baton Rouge, but we hit the trails every couple days anyway.

Anyone heard of a "hybrid" bike? We were looking online last night at bikes and all she could talk about was a hybrid and training for a triathlon.

I've got a 24 speed Schwinn Moab with Judy rock shocks, v brakes etc. I believe its a 15inch frame however but I'm 5'11 and I can still ride it w/o problem. I paid $1000 and its in great shape. Make me a offer. I'm open.

I havent in about 3 years. Im gonna start getting back into it soon, but I really dont know where too many trails are around here. We used to go to one off old alabama but it was destroyed and most of it paved. They took down almost all of the jumps, because people could get hurt on them:confused. If you know somewhere I'm definitely down to go though Im very out of shape and may need a few breaks.
