I am want to upgrade my motor from 540ia to v12 tt 6 speed. I am also wanting to do other upgrades like seats, steering wheels, radio, and climate control from newer models. I really like the e34 over the other 5s and just want to update what I have.
I was looking for turbos for the 540i but didnot find much for that motor.
Also if any one could tell how well the E34 m5 compairs with the 540i
I'm also looking to buy a 2nd E34, m5 or 540i pros and cons for both.

Wow.. with all that money, why are you driving an e34? V-12's are not hard to find, but cost a fortune to re-build. As far as turbo's... go look at the engine bay of your 540i and decided where you want your turbo to mount... I'll save you some time, there is no room. There has been talk of a remote turbo set up, and Dinan built a turbo 540i race car a while back. It can be done, but it would require a ton of work.

go buy a running e32 750

drive it and decide if you like it, if so swap it into a 525 shell.

done.

540 vs m5?

go drive them and then decide. I can not make up your mind for you...

aah, just go for a 6 speed conversion on the M60 and soup it up. you'll save $ and will be able to find more performance stuff for the M60.

M5 is a different beast, lots of fun right out of the box:D

X2.

For the type of money you are talking, go buy an e39 M5. If you really like the E34 that much and want a lot of power, go find a clean 540i sport with a 6 speed and put a blower on it. That will get you in the 400hp range for $15000 or so.

If you want a ton more power, you should just turbo the engine you have, or drop an M30 in there and turbo that. Unless you want to work on that V12 to make it more powerful before the turbos are added, it won't make much more power than the M60 in there now.

With the right rods and pistons in either the M30 or M60, you could have well over 600rwhp, and plenty of room to put the turbo to get you there.

He could go with a 6L conversion like Ahmed, have ~450rwhp on tap.

The only reasonable option is a supercharger.

does the 6 speed 540i perform much better than the AT?

No, it's not crazy, it's just a lot of work.

I built an E34 V12 car. It's a lot of work and it's very expensive to correctly do it, even without needing to rebuild the engine. The front half of the car and everything in the driveline effectively has to be replaced. Then there's the electrics... I use factory tools, factory diagnostic equipment, and have access to some of the best resources in the industry. We've done 3 of these, mine still took a long time to sort.

This guy appears to not really know what he's doing and has been at it for years (with a factory V12 car): http://www.v12extreme.com/

The car should probably still be converted to a 6 speed. The 5hp-30 weighs a ton and saps an unbelievable amount of power: a converted E38 750 with an exhaust makes more RWHP than a factory automatic E38 750 is rated for at the crank (and better numbers than an E39 M5 makes at the wheels). Beyond that, a supercharger is the best bang for the buck on a V8 E34.

thanks for the info, I have had this car setting in my garage for the last 2.5 collecting dust and wanted to get into something that my son and I could have fun with. This car has an AT . Does the 6 speed run much better? I am looking to buy a 6mt 540 to buy or should I look for an e34 m5?
I just do know much about these cars as far as what can be done to them. I bought this car new in 1994 to get my wife of my back.she wanted me to trade my 911 for a family car. thats why I never looked at the 6 speed.

The 5hp30 can be built to take large amounts of power, but a 6 speed trans (the S6S 420G) is much more fun to drive. It does take a bit of work to convert it, though.

Hey man, cant help you much with tech info. But heres a link (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=836470&highlight=dinan+v12)to some pics of what your wanting to do. (not much info there though)

If you really need an extra hand and cant find one, Im over at TTU in Lubbock. Rest assured though, yourself permitting, when you get this thing finished im coming for a ride:buttrock

I did a 6 speed conversion on my car and it wasn't bad at all. I would plan to do that, and supercharge it

I will be the one to argue that it is crazy and is not worth the amount of work or money it takes to accomplish. If you are out to be unique, do something more logical. If you are out to make a lot of horsepower, you're chasing the wrong engine.
