View Full Version : Any Central Ohio'ans put their snow tires on for the season? ASCH MAN 11-26-2007, 09:29 AM Just wondering when you will put on your snow tires. I am considering this weekend. bimmer95 11-26-2007, 11:30 AM I think I waited until February last year, a day before that one nasty storm and took them back off a few weeks later. We get so little real snow here that, if you have a second set of wheels with the snow tires on them, it doesn't make sense to stick them on for months at a time. Driving with snow tires on dry pavement all winter sucks. POS VETT 11-26-2007, 03:38 PM Both my M3s have their winter tires installed since two weeks or so ago. whopwood 11-26-2007, 04:51 PM I put them on the morning I open the garage to go to work and there is more snow than the PS2s can handle. It takes me about 10 minutes with the floor jack and air impact :D ASCH MAN 11-26-2007, 05:00 PM I put them on the morning I open the garage to go to work and there is more snow than the PS2s can handle. It takes me about 10 minutes with the floor jack and air impact :D What if the snow started to fall while you are at work? That is the one time I almost got into serious trouble. bimmer95 11-26-2007, 05:21 PM Just check the weather reports daily... usually the local news warns of impending White Death if we're going to get more than 1/4" in a day. Jhunter 11-26-2007, 05:37 PM I don't put on winter tires as I have a winter car that becomes available the first of the year. I pray for no snow in Decmeber. If we do get a December snow and you see a silver 335 doing 4 mph down Sawmill Road with the back end going sideways, thats me! Feel free to honk and wave. typeS4 11-26-2007, 09:04 PM I'm in Indiana but I put mine on this past weekend. Cold+hard compound tires=loud and rough ride. :( Thank god the stockies are quiet and soft! whopwood 11-26-2007, 09:51 PM What if the snow started to fall while you are at work? That is the one time I almost got into serious trouble. Just tell the boss that you still got summer tires on and you gotta go home before it gets too deep. It only works once per fall though. :D mobilegun 11-27-2007, 11:03 AM isnt part of the wheel swapping equation operating temperature as well instead of just the snow and ice itself. in looking at the forecast coming up its right on the brink of when i plan to flip mine. this weekend possibly but i keep putting it off... on a mostly unrelated note, anyone know of a non freezing (indoor?) place i can bring my own stuff to wash my car during the colder months? And, I will go sideways along with you while spinning the rears like there is no tomorrow :D POS VETT 11-27-2007, 12:23 PM isnt part of the wheel swapping equation operating temperature as well instead of just the snow and ice itself. in looking at the forecast coming up its right on the brink of when i plan to flip mine. this weekend possibly but i keep putting it off... I agree. Tires on my M3s are dedicated summer tires (INVO, F1 GS-D3, Pilot Sport) that low enough temp will harden the rubber compound enough to the point that traction is significantly affected. Winter tires don't burn up that fast on the dry when the temperature is low enough. hinzm3 11-27-2007, 04:24 PM I'm not going to risk it... car will just sit all winter. I'm not sure how I will handle that as this is the first time I'll ever store a car for the winter. I have to get working on my e30 though so I will have something to at least get me to work! It takes me about 10 minutes with the floor jack and air impact :D PS2 dont handle any snow... I put my kontours and snow tires on last weekend.... ASCH MAN 12-03-2007, 09:48 AM I broke down and put them on this weekend. Maybe I am getting old, but the slighly cushier ride (going from 17's to 16's) is sort of nice. jnyost 12-03-2007, 12:39 PM Have been wanting to buy me a new set. Have the wheel ready, just no tires. If anyone sees a set of tires let me know, otherwise I'll be buying a set of new ones this week. Jared Wildeone 12-17-2007, 11:00 PM Good subject for a newbie BMW owner like me. I had no idea of how badly my E38 would perform in the snow until a few weeks ago. I am used to driving front wheel drive and 4WD trucks, what a difference. Actually once I got to work, I quicky scoured EBAY for rims and tires! Do they make a big difference? Are they worth the $600 I am going to sink into them? Bimmer161 12-17-2007, 11:17 PM i was about to get some... but i drove it over the weekend in the snow and really had no issues @ all. i was doin' better than a bunch of 4x4 blazers & such that i was near on the highway :) jnyost 12-18-2007, 01:44 AM Good subject for a newbie BMW owner like me. I drove to the tire shop a couple weeks ago when we got snow and almost wrecked. I eventually pulled off into someone's driveway and called my tire shop. They brought out the tire truck and jacked my car up in the drive way and took the wheels to the shop to install the tires. I installed the Dunlop WinterSport 3D's. I LOVE them. I have a hard time believing you are able to do better than a 4 wheel drive unless they had bald tires or didn't know how to drive. It's just not possible. They have more weight with more tires driving the vehicle. I'm not doubting you did ok but not better than a 4wd. I did "ok" with all season tires on my 328 but no where near as good as my 540 does on real snow tires. Jared POS VETT 12-18-2007, 09:52 AM I just put my summer set back on last night. Bald Azenis = wooohooo  Hathaway 12-18-2007, 11:12 AM Im still runnin myFuzion HRi 225/45-17 all seasons on my car, and did about 250miles on the highway this past Sunday on 'em too. purplem3pursuit 12-18-2007, 05:27 PM I thought about getting snow tires, but bought a new truck instead :P hinzm3 12-18-2007, 05:51 PM I thought about getting snow tires, but bought a new truck instead :P Hey.. where in Ohio are you? purplem3pursuit 12-18-2007, 05:58 PM Hey.. where in Ohio are you? dublin... and columbus area in general. hinzm3 12-18-2007, 06:00 PM Ah yeah I think I asked you already but I forgot. Jared they're "all weather"... which doesnt mean anything. about 50% tread. there were three 4x4s in particular in front of me that were crabwalking... and one slid through an intersection. my step mom told me it took her neary half an hour to drive across delaware (home town). i drove throught the exact same snow an hour later with no issues @ all. might just be snow experience. Oh.... and im in gahanna ohio. but im usually around the lewis center/delaware area purplem3pursuit 12-19-2007, 09:26 AM Ah yeah I think I asked you already but I forgot.
