My check engine light popped on earlier today, did the normal thing first and took it to AutoZone to get the codes read. No codes popped up at which point the worker guy informed me that just means the car needs to be serviced.

I'm not going to take my car for a visual inspection that I know it doesn't need. I had the car looked over less than six months ago and everything was fine. I do know it needs an oil change though so that will be my first step tomorrow.

Question though, how in the heck do I reset the SES light after I've done the oil change? I went through the search tool and most threads said to complete whatever needs to be worked on and then reset it. No directions on how to do so.

Can someone shoot me a hint here and let me know?

Thanks

You'll need a Peake tool to reset the light, but don't be surprised to see it go out in the next day or two. If you're pretty good about taking your car to an indy every once in a while, he'll be able to pull up any codes, as long as you don't disconnect the battery for an extended period for whatever reason. I let my indy shop do my oil and filter ($90.00 w/ Mobil 1) every 7500K and he checks for codes each time. I average 1 SES light each change and so far they've been nothing to worry about, except for the CPS sensor a little while back. He's always told me that if SES comes on and the car doesn't drive right, bring it to him, but if it drives fine just see if it goes out in a few days and he'll check it when he sees the car again. If you don't have an indy you trust yet, find one, but in the meantime, get a Peake.

Are you confusing the "Service Interval Display" with the "Service Engine Soon" light?
