View Full Version : York, PA : Ford Model A Help!
95///M3 11-23-2007, 12:57 PM Does anyone on the board have any experience with Model A's? I have a fully restored vehicle that needs to have the condenser and points replaced, and I have absolutely zero experience with this type of work. I have the new parts as well as new plugs, cap, fully rebuilt carb, all new fluids, belts, etc... so essenitally, it should run (I hope) after figuring out the spark issue.
If someone here either has experience or knows of someone who can help me out, that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Jimmy

crucifudge 01-29-2008, 12:43 AM I havnt worked on any car older then 1989, but I know there is somebody who lives right near the college (between the two campus') who has/had a model A, If I run into him working on the car again i'll ask. I may not know that perticular car, but if you need any help turning wrenches, I can do that, I'll even do it just for the chance to see the LTW and m5, send me a pm if you want.

Thanks, let me know what he says.
As far as turning wrenches, I have a good amount of tools here and am pretty knowledgeable on newer vehicles. I just have no clue of what to do on this old stuff. Really should be quite simple but I just dont know how.
For the LTW and M5, you are more than welcome to swing by and take a look. The M5 is under the knife at the moment but should be coming back together in the coming months. PM me if you would like to stop by.

I think you should swap in an S52 with an AA turbo kit into that Model A. :D

ORLY?
I find it amusing that when I was growing electronic ignition and fuel injection systems were considered impossible to understand, diagnose and repair. Now it's difficult to find someone that can replace and adjust points.
It takes just a screwdriver (the only kind -- slotted), a file and a test light. With new points you don't even need a file. Life is more precise with a timing light, feeler gauges and dwell meter, but the model A used driver-adjusted advance and could be set with static dwell timing -- you could set the angle over which the points made contact by watching the test light as you slowly turned the crank. If you really screwed thing up you reset the timing approximately with the same test light. The exact angle didn't matter since you adjusted the timing advance from the driver's position.
A few hours of driving later you filed the points smooth and repeated the process, usually combined with cleaning the spark plugs that had gotten extra fouled by the dwell being off.
RudeBoy37 02-05-2008, 12:30 AM Not to take this off topic, but where in York do you live? I've lived in the area for about 6 years and don't think that I've ever seen your E36 LTW or the M5. I probably would have almost wrecked my car if I had seen one of them. lol
