So, I fixed my 2002 and it starts up like a champ. I took it around the block 3 times and works beautifully. 1 thing that caught me off guard. I know older carbuerated cars have chokes on them, so on cold starts it would idle high to get it warm, than you would release the choke and the idle/rpms would drop down low.
So my car is a 75 2k2, with a 81? 320i Fuel injected motor converted to carbueration. I turned it on, it was revving high, to about 2.5k rpms and than it didnt go down. I thought my choke was engaged so I went to release it, but it was already released. I pulled it and the damn thing came out. I popped the hood and theres no choke attached to the carbuerator. I have absolutely no idea what kind of carb i have and no idea where this thing goes. I literally just ordered the Haynes Repair Manual so I would have a book with for times like this. Anyone know where this thing is supposed to go? Its just a piece of wire literally hanging in the engine bay.

With the car off, take the air cleaner lid off. See if the choke butterflies are shut. If they are, manually open them, start the car and see where the idle is at.
DO NOT LOOK OVER THE CARB WHILE YOU'RE CRANKING OR WHILE IT'S RUNNING!
Good luck- Cris

Contact the person you got it from. they can tell you. I have a 76 with an electric choke and it hangs up alot. the engine is actually out of a 73 and the carb is 2 barrel Solex. I have a Weber 38/38 in a box and it's going on Wednesday. Right now starting it is a 2 person job. One turns the key and another flicks the carb to close the choke.

A picture of the carb/engine bay would help us help you. Is your throttle linkage binding, does it move freely? Whats the timing at? If the choke is not hooked up like you say, is the idle screw in to far? Figure out what carb you have and report back. Seems like a simple problem that you can fix yourself, with the forums help. good luck.

Does this car have an electric fuel pump? Looks like something of the sort above the brake booster. If so, maybe it's giving too much/not enough fuel at idle? The carb looks standard fare two barrel weber, check the idle jets, maybe gunked up? Ya gotta clean that work space up. Hows that fuel filter? That carb has either a water(thats what it looks like is there) or an electric choke, no cables that the driver operates. Like Cris said, pop of that K&N and see whats going on under there!

under the K&N is just butterfly flaps, its an electric fuel pump, and i just put a new one on there, trust me its getting plenty of fuel now, the old one wasn't delivering enough, the one i put on is OEM specifications, i dropped 100 bux on the damn thing the one above the brake booster is the old one, i have a new one installed now

Those butterfly flaps are the chokes.

well than i am a noob, but how come the idle stays at 2.5k rpms, it has dropped once since i've gotten the car working again. Is it cause its really cold out now?
