View Full Version : mb quarts?
ToppedOut525i 11-17-2007, 07:45 PM Ive heard that MB quart makes some kick a$$ 5.25" speakers so im gonna start looking into them. My question/s is If i get component mb quart speakers, where should i mount the tweeters? Also how much wattage should i run to each speaker? I know that on most mb-quarts the power handling is like 35-100 watts but i'm not completely sure on the power handling concept.
help an audio newbie out!
Ianbiz 11-17-2007, 08:18 PM Older MB Quart stuff is better than the newer stuff.
BlownE36 11-17-2007, 08:44 PM If interested I have a unused set of MB Quart Tweeters out of the QSD-216, comes with crossovers. $130 shipped. They fit directly on the stock tweeter location on an E36.
carstereopro 11-17-2007, 08:45 PM MB Quart has changed ownership twice in the last 4-5 years.
The old MB Quart stuff was great.
The Rockford years 2003-2006 nothing changed but ownership, and the intro of Rockford amps dressed in MB Quart.
Maxxonics purchased MB Quart, and changed the product line for the worse.
Leif Blackmon designed the "Q" and Premium series equipment that put them on the map as a high end speaker manufacturer.
If you liked the old MB Quart, you should try Boston Acoustics current product line-up. Leif came to work for Boston Acoustics 6-7 years ago, (well after designing the MB's premium line, and right after the "Q" began shipping)
I am proud to call Leif a friend, and one of the smartest people I've ever met in the Audio Industry.
True story:
At the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Leif and I were talking with an MB Quart enthusiast, who didn't realize who Leif was.
As I told him about the technological advancements in the speaker design of the Boston Pro's Vs. the MB Quart "Q" series, he said "you don't know anything about MB Quart, the Q's are better, that's why they're $1000 speakers and the Pro's are $600 speakers."
Leif quickly fired back with, "The Q's are great speakers, but all things being equal the Pro's perform at the same level to the Q's at almost half the price. Better yet, they will outperform the Q's if you can give them enough power. I've always loved the Q's, ever since I designed them, 8 years ago."

Wow, that is crazy! Because I myself compared the new boston's compared to my old qseries and felt that they were very similar. Very interesting, thanks for that info.
But i agree on old Q being better, but even the new stuff, at how cheap you can by them off ebay or elsewhere they are still good speakers. I really do like the New Boston Stuff though...
I just put in 4" Q's in my doors, check out my thread. Adding some midbass speakers help a TON for the Q's. And the tweeter fits just perfect in stock location..

:confused
You designed them?

so the tweeters fit well in an E36? how are the tweeters set up in it? I'm kinda worried about them mounting in place of the stock tweeters in the E34. (I want the car to look completely stock, but absolutely slam :D)
jayhudson 11-18-2007, 11:44 AM I would agree that the Bostons sound better than the Quarts. But, it's often a personal preference.
For the 9 years I was in the car audio business, we were a Boston dealer. I never sold Quarts so my experience with them is much more limited. Based on my experience with them this is my take on the Quarts. 1) They are very sharp/bright. If you like highs and sharp sounds like horns and cymbals you'll be happy. 2) They are lacking in midbass. 3) They need a lot of power to work well.
Like any speaker purchase, you should audition them before laying your money down.

ToppedOut525i 11-18-2007, 01:54 PM okay i've got another question for the audio gurus: Boston acoustics and mb quart component midbass speakers come with crossovers- are these necessary? i'm pretty sure that the stock amp in my E34 does all the crossovers, so could i just plug and play these speakers without sacrificing any sound quality? I'm pretty sure that I will have enough wattage, because i'm amplifying larger signal from my new alpine head unit with my stock amp, and i can blow my stock speakers like nothing if i wanted to.

Yes, you can use the existing active crossovers in the amp.
No, you don't have more power just because you are sending in a larger signal from your new headunit. What has actually changed is that Max volume (without clipping) now occurs sooner when you turn the volume knob. Stated differently, if before you could turn the know to 10, now you may only be able to turn it to 8 without clipping.
Amplifiers have a max power output, and it doesn't matter what signal you give it, the max doesn't change.

Are you talking about the Add a woofer kits?
What you really need to do is take out your stock amp, buy a 4 channel and run everything off there. Then you will use the crossover that comes with the add a woofer kits so you can present the 3 way as one speaker to the amp for left and right front channels. Than you can run the stock Rear's off the other two channels iirc. Stock amp is not going to compliment the MB Quarts or at all the boston's very well. You want to be getting the most out of your components as for sound quality and longevity of the speaker.

sounds good. but wait, so you're recommending not changing the rear shelf speakers? im guessing changing them would be overkill?

Putting in good rear speakers really won't gain you much, unless you like impressing your rear passengers. :)
I don't even run any rear speakers in my current setup, just have a 4channel run my front stage. The only thing i can see running rears for is if you were able run a bigger speaker for a little more midbass, but in our cars the kick panel works great!
ToppedOut525i 11-19-2007, 01:05 AM alright well i guess for starters i'll run a pair of component midbasses up front and see how it sounds :buttrock
