My 1997 E39 528i metal sunroof is jammed half-open and the wrench doesn't move it more than 3-4". The motor is working but something has broken in the track.

I need to get it out for repairs. Has anyone removed their sunroof assembly ? How did you do it ?

ok- this is not fun but it's do-able.

Remove sunshades/ oh-no handles/headliner- this is the hard part. Most of it pops right off but theres some screws near the sunroof edge that are a pain in the ass.

Once the liner is down you'll see the whole roof is in a "cassette"- just unbolt the bolts, unplug and clean the drains and lower it from the back seat, it slides in the front.

Pretty easy really, just take your time and it should all be self explanatory.
