View Full Version : FS: S52 cam removal, and installation tool
lmpmotorsports 11-15-2007, 10:45 PM This is a great tool for the person who repairs there own engines. This cam tool is capable of removing or installing one or both cams at the same time.As far as the application I know it will work on the 1994-1999 3 series cars (s52 engines). Past that someone with more knowledge may be able to say what else has the same style cylinder head that it may work on. I am an ASE certified auot mechanic, and built and designed this out of neccesity for working on a few of my budddies cars at home.As you all know how expensive these cams are here is a way to avoud breaking them at lot less cost than a factory tool.Pictures can be seen at pictures.aol.com click on the explore tab,and type in lmpmotorsports in the search tag and the pictures will appear. The tool works by being able to put uniform pressure on all cam caps allowing you to move the cam up or down in its carrier evenly.I will supply a set of instructions that i have with the tool.Cost for the tool is 225.00$ +25.00$ shipping within the continental US only!!!! Aministrators PLEASE don't tow my thread for this tool this time. After talking to a friend of mine who is a fellow member. We felt the reason you may have towed thie last thread was the user name i have. Because it sounds like business name. This is not true it is a play on my last name and the word motorsports that myself and my sons enter our cars at the race track under.I would hope this thread can stay I,d love to be able to help other auto, and racing enthusuiasts like myself. Thanks inadvance for your consideration.
Thanks Much

You should post a lot of images of te tool so folks can see the quality.
vinnymac 11-16-2007, 02:15 PM That's an interesting looking tool. It's not like the factory tool but still looks quite functional. How does the tool bolt onto the head?
I might be interested in buying it.

ScotcH 11-16-2007, 03:03 PM Looks like it just bolts in the same places as the valve cover. Looks like a good tool for a shop or the oftenswappers :)
dcvee 11-16-2007, 06:24 PM I can't see how this tool releases all the bearing caps at the same time? That's the whole idea behind the eccentric "cam" on the factory type tool. If I'm understanding it's operation correctly, I could do the same by unscrewing each pair of nuts on a cap a turn at a time?
Maybe I'm missing something?
Don
lmpmotorsports 11-16-2007, 07:27 PM The tool does not release all caps at the same time such as an eccentric type tool. You work each jack screw up one half turn at a time. The advantage to this tool is the cost versus the factory tool, and the fact that you can do both cams with out removing the tool and switching it to the opposite side.Obviously any tool can have it's pros and cons but the cost should make it more than useful to anyone. It will also work in the vehicle which is idel at the track or home. Thanks for your input it's always interesting to hear someone elses take on something like this.
lmpmotorsports 11-16-2007, 07:29 PM Vinnymac the way the tool mounts is by removing the factory cam cover studs, and the tool sets flush on the head then you use the cam cover studs to mount it down. Thanks for asking
