And was it an option on the '06 330i?

yes it was an option. Drive it around the block and you'll easily be able to tell. Turning a 90 degree turn doesn't require much input, on a no AS car you almost have to cross your hands if at 3/10.

sit still, and turn wheel lock to lock. if you've got active steering, the wheel won't even make a full revolution from center to one side.

Won't impress him that much at a standstill though ;).

Do you folks that have it really enjoy it? I haven't driven one with it yet.

I have active steering on my car, and yes I enjoy it a great deal.

What it does is that it increases the steering ratio when the speed of your car is low and decrease the steering ratio when your car is travelling fast. In essence, it gives you sharper steering w/o having to turn the steering wheel so much. When travelling at 30 km / h, I only have to turn my steering wheel from 12 o'clock to 11 o'clock position to make a 90 degree turn whereas I will have to turn my wheel from 12 o'clock to 10 o'clock or 9 o'clock to make the same turn when driving a non-active steering car.

How I notice is when I first picked up my car, I have trouble approximating turns because of the dynamic steering ratio. Now, I have 'adapted' to it I find it difficult to drive cars that doesn't have that feature.

Post the last 7 of the VIN and I'll let you know.

Is active steering worth it?

If someone else paid for it on a new car and you're buying it used - absolutely
If you're paying for that option - not a chance

I agree, money best spent elsewhere, unless you have lots of money and don't know what to do with it. If it came standard on the car, I'd take it anyday though.
