:help My 1998 E36 man.tranny occasionally jumps out of 1st plus it runs out of fuel when the guage shows just under 1/4 full !?!

Driving home tonight it popped out about 4 times ! So its getting worse. Should i f*ck it off before it gives up ? Also i've noticed when i pull up and then put it in 1st its silent but if i de-clutch and try again theres a low thud at the backend. Plus when i go from 1st to 2nd i can feel something in the gearstick, like its rubbing past something rough. Are these 2 symptons normal, common or indicitive of the problem. My BMW dealership just told me they would have to put in a new gearbox at a cost of £2,000, that must be about $5,500 dollars ! Thats a third of what the car cost me !
