I'm pulling a tranny out of one of the cars at the junkyard on Saturday and was wondering what tools i would need, I don't want to keep running all over the place to get all the tools I'll need so i figured I would ask the guys who know, what do I need to get this done in a reasonable amount of time? Thanks in advance for all the input you guys can offer.

a good socket wrench set with at least deep and shallow 10,11, 12, 13, 17mm sockets, At least 2 1/2ft. of extensions, a portable work light, a floor jack w/ stands, hammer, pry bar, Open ended metric wrench set 10-19mm or a good cresent wrench (preferably both) and a strong friend (~60 push ups/min)

You may also need some e-torx sockets.
Hvae a gander at realoem.com for the year and model of the car you are pulling the tranny from, and all of the fastener sizes should be listed.

if its the M60 motor u will need the e-torx socket for the tranny to engine bolts.
a sawzall will be helpfull too in helping those "stubborn" bolts. ie. exhaust bolts after the cats

I needed those sockets in a pinch and bought them at Sears, they stock them.
My current best time to pull the tranny out of my car is 75 minutes...try to beat it!! I've had that tranny in and out like 5 times this year, getting to be old hat. The big dog is probably a bit tougher, so good luck with that!
On the 525i there are some allen screws that hold a bracket to the transmission (it goes to the front tranny mounts), so better have a set of those with you.
I've had the problem a couple times too when the input shaft is kind of stuck in the pilot bearing and the transmission won't come off the engine. All prying does is flex the pressure plate, so I had to rig up some screws to push the transmission off...like a reverse press or something. You get creative in those situations ;)
Make sure you have a good collection of screwdrivers and pry bars, with a solid hammer. Oh and when you've got all the bolts out, start working the transmission off slowly and look for an alignment pin by the starter. The first time I pulled my tranny that thing was seriously stuck. I ground down a piece of rod to act like a long wedge and had to hammer it into the gap and force it apart. If that doesn't make sense now I'm sorry, but I'm sure it'll come together in a couple days.
Good luck!
