Hey everyone, I just bought a black (on grey) e34 535i/5spd and it has no window tint. i'm wondering if i should go with the legal oregon limit, 35%, or lower? Will anyone with a black (or other dark color) post pics? also, how much did it cost to have done, and if anyone is in portland, where is a quality shop?:)

rumor has it that most oregon cops will let you get away with the washington tint limits because of how close portland is to the oregon/wash border and a lot of people buy cars from washington (vice versa). many of portland shops will tint to washington standards (including the shop that gives you a discount for having a costco card =D).

Thanks bro! Yea.. same suspension.. but you have the 5 speed w/SSK and IIRC, you'll have the MS2.. right? Or are you still running the MAF? I'd switch with you any day.

You're talking in terms of reflectiveness correct? Oregon it can't be more than 13% reflective, whereas in Wash. it can be 35%. Both states require letting more than 35% of light through in terms of darkness.

I was talking about percentage of light. I thought washington allowed 5% less then oregon.. thats a old figure though so I could be blowing smoke..

32% would be as low as I'd go. Coming from a legal stand point.

_Your handle could read "Triple Black":stickoutt.......Shame our Missouri laws are still 35% on the front panes. I'd like to run the darker 20% all around.:(

Texas only permits 35% on the front passenger and drivers side windows...
nonetheless I have 5% all around.

Why dark tint? I just do not get it. Looks like you are trying to hide something. Just attracts thieves and cops. Cannot be safe at night!

Also, about Half the tinted cars I see have their tints peeling or turning purple.

Funny, I have had zip problems with the police re: tint or anything else.

Why dark tint?
I dunno, perhaps because:
I live in a desert...

so not only is it hot from march thru thanksgiving, but there are no clouds in the sky 350 days a year...

and it just looks damn good

I have 35% up front and 2% in the back, IMO it looks so much better just sets off the chrome trim. 220$ for everything.

honestly id go 25-20% if you have a gray interior.if its a black interior it will look darker than actually is....i have a tan interior and 20% and had that for about a year now and i havent gotten a ticket or even pulled over yet.

i just had our black (on tan) touring tinted at Tommy's on se 12th in Portland. They did a great job, less than $250 for all windows. i went with 35% on the front, 20% on the rest. i think it looks sweet, but if i had to do it again i'd go 35% all around. it's dark and overcast enough here that 20% or 5% is overkill in the back.

i'll post a few photos this weekend. Tommy's did a fantastic job, fast, high quality, excellent service, i'd recommend them.

let's see photos of yours! if i ever sell the touring i'll likely replace it with a 535i manual.

I have 20% all around and never any problems with cops. I love the smoked ambers, I have the same and think they look great, nice touring.

You should expect to pay anywhere from $200-$225 for the tint in any darkness you want. Some shops will make you sign a disclaimer that you are aware that they are tinting darker than the law allows. Other shops will make you pay in cash and no receipt or call it something else. Good Luck!

I own a black e34 also and I was considering having mywindows tinted but in Ireland as far as I know we don't have a percentage tint when you go to get your windows tinted you ask for light, dark smoke or limo tints and I can't make any sense of it. Does anyone know what light smoke is equivalent to as I reckon that 20% tint would be enough for me.

Sounds like your wanting Dark Smoke( =20%),by their definition.:) Light being 35%. And Limo being 5%.

Each state has it's own highly complicated laws. Check this site out for state regs. http://home.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tint/. I had a car done in FL and brought back to MI. Got about a 5 tickets with it, but none for speeding. They pulled me over for speeding but wrote me for the tinting and since it's not a point violation on my license I thanked them and went on.

As you can see, it's turned purplish, but I don't mind it. I'm also color blind :shifty

If it's hideous, please humor me.

I just made another payment of my "Tint Tax" last Thursday. I have 50% on the Front Door Windows and 35% on the Rear door windows. The rears are illegal in Virginia. The cop tells me that with the dark tint - he is worried when he pulls me over he cant see in the car and is afraid I am going to shoot him. As a result - I could get shot in the process by a nervous cop. I am thinking I am going to go ahead and get the rear windows legalized to 50% - JT

Tints that turn Purple faded shades are of a lesser quality to begin with. You really ought to have that stripped off replaced with a Llumar or Solar Shade brand etc. These won't fade if you buy their top shelf stuff. Not to mention the heat/UV ray that they reject is SOOOO much better. Your interior bits will love you for it later.....so might your leather !!:)
Cheers,Vinny

Cheers,VinnyAll good points. Luckily I live in a place that doesn't have sun too often, or if it does it's never too harsh. The car is from Hawaii, where I assume it was tinted in the first place. There is no peeling or bubbling, so knowing me I'll probably keep it on until that happens (which might never happen).
