Well I am pissed Two guys came to drive me car last night (1995 525i m50 5speed) The man buying the car was from India and brought his friend from Asia to drive the car because he wasn't comfortable driving the manual car. About half an hour into the test drive (I didn't go with them) I get a call that they are having problems with the car.

They end up beginning 3 miles from my house on the side of the road barely in bust traffic. As soon as I pull up I can smell the clutch. I go to get in the car and the guy almost open the door right into a passing car he was an idiot. My friend that came with me had to get in the passenger side and by like Get Out!! The guy didn't know what was going on. So I get in the drives seat and there is no key he f*%kin took it with him.

Any ways the pedal just dropped to the floor. So we pushed the car off the road. Talk to them and they completely denied anything on their part. The clutch grabbed fine before they drove it and it never slipped. So I manged to get $500 out of them.

The next day they met me at a local service station. He had made an appt. there to get the car looked over before if broke so we just kep the appt.

The service place didn't put the car in the air they just wrote up a clutch cost parts and labor for $1669.00 The guy just didn't believe me that he and his friend abused the car. Finally I got another $425 out of him and I figured that would cover the clutch if I did it. We signed a agreement that he was at fault and the deal was settle that was the stupid idea.

I get the car towed home and look at in my driveway. The entire drivers side of the tranny bell housing is cracked and has a big hole in the top from where the clutch plate tried to come through. What the F&*K what were these guys doing?

Sorry for the long post but what the hell.

What I need to know is do I need a new tranny or can I just replace the bell housing?

I think it would be cheaper to find a used transmission.

Thank you

Colin

The manual trans mated to an m50 is all one piece. You could probably get it welded at a local machine shop for $50 or less, or get a good used trans, $325 +/-. On the up side, now is the perfect time to get rid of the boat anchor dual-mass flywheel and put a lighter conventional flywheel (e30) on it. Getting rid of the dual mass flywheel really livens up the m50. Several ebay vendors sell the Valeo complete single mass flywheel, pressure plate, disk, & throw-out bearing for $499.

At least you got some money out of it. They could have just baged out and really screwed you over.
