bmw15012 11-14-2007, 08:10 AM Hey Track Junkies....I need a sanity check here. I waste some time down in Off Topic at work and I recently posed this same question to that audience. Much to my surprise, a large percentage are not able to legally buy a beer in this country. Any grey hair in this section?....:)....Bob

mjOlson 11-14-2007, 11:21 AM Yeah, I'm with Bryan Jay. You guys are the "arrive and drive" retirement generation! Can't blame you guys for the chuckleheads across the river from me falling asleep at the wheel though. But still bitter! :)
Keep the votes up, my team is winning! Ugh, driving a desk all day really does make one rather pathetic. Wonder what the client would think about logitech forcefeedback wheel screwed down in front of my keyboard. The sound it makes working the wheel back and forth quickly during a tank slapper gets the dog all rilled up at home; wonder what how our quiet, church lady admin would react.

Was referring to "showing up" to retirement and having SS there. Like Bryan pointed out, our generation will likely not have any SS funds left to get. Unless these under 19 folks on the poll get workin!
I hear you on not being able to afford it. I own part of a shop and can't afford to have someone do the work! Can't complain about having a nice lift, compressed air, complete sets of tools, autologic to work the abs/ews and individual wheel valves to simply bleed my brakes though. ;)

Bud Scott 11-14-2007, 10:40 PM 49 and holding for two more weeks anyway. Wife still expects me to give up this racing thing. Kids college fund never got started!
Ran my first autocross in 79, my first Pro Rally in 81. Stayed with the Pro Rally stuff till those damn kids (4 of them, all conceived at a motorsports event!) cut into travel and car prep budgets. Ran my first BME DE in 2000 and stayed on pavement ever since. My son wrecked my ITB POS-318i back in April. We finished up his RX-7 and just completed breaking it in at an SCCA race and a BMW race school the last few weekends.
Looking frantically for an E30 318is or 325 of some sort for me to get back in a Bimmer race car. Wife really wants to punish me for this now! Crap, ANOTHER trip to the jewelry store for Christmas. There goes a set of tires!

Easy to answer: I was fastest when I was spending more time in a race car. Now that I only race 4-6 times a year, I've slowed significantly from when I raced 10-15 times a year and ran test days and DE's in between.
NeilM 11-15-2007, 10:13 AM 58, BMW CCA instructor for 8 years.

Maybe its just me (at my age!) but I find If I apply this logic to my performance with the spouse during "special Mommy and Daddy alone time" it appears to be inversely proportional. The less I do it the faster I get. That's good, right?

If I wasn't making too much money I would have been drawing my SS for a year an a half now. I'll start drawing mine in May of 2010 when I turn 66.
Don't tell me I'm the oldest person in this poll. Come on, someone 'fess up' and admit you were born before May 31, 1944.
jtspells 11-17-2007, 11:17 PM well my dad was born in 42......
///Madman 11-17-2007, 11:36 PM well my dad was born in 42......
The only part of being 63 1/2 that bothers me is that I realize I probably won't be able to drive on track 25 years from now (athough I plan to be driving at 80). I drove my first Sports Car when I was 16 (my Dads brand new 1960 TR-3) and was fortunate enough to have a brand new 67 AH-3000 in 1967. But I was going on 56 before I ever got on a track (too busy raising a family). I'm making up for lost time with 112 track days completed and day 113 Monday at Infineon.

43 track days, 8 in a 02 M Roadster, 28 in a 02 M3 and the rest in a Spec E36 (94 325is) build. 1/2 SCCA Rookie License and hopefully BMWCCA CR license December 7 & 8.
Does that make me the oldest?

Until someone beats 1-9-42 you can claim to be the oldest. when did you start doing track events? I started 2-12-00 and have done 112 since then. All in my 98 M Roadster. Maybe I'll start racing when I turn 65. LOL!

BahnBurner 11-19-2007, 04:45 PM My hat is off to all the older guys out there. I hope to be doing this when I am that age.
I'm 27 and started doing auto-x's and DE's last year. I hope to be racing in another year. I am looking forward to it.

My first track event was at Summit Point FATT the first time the public was allowed to run Shenandoah Circuit, late winter early spring 2004. In 2006 I did, Watkins Glen, Mid-Ohio, Shenandoah, Summit Point, VIR, CMSP, Barber and Sebring.
Rich V 11-22-2007, 07:28 PM I'm 25, looking to get my license next year.
Started with autocross at 18, been doing a lot of track events the last couple years, working on getting faster.....MUCH faster. ;)
autox320 11-23-2007, 01:08 PM 30....mainly autocross for last 10yrs. Never got much into track because something always came up....marriage, work, school, divorce. Now that most of those things are out of the way, I hope to see more seat time. Just a few more years overseas:evil2
