View Full Version : About to buy a 318ti, advice needed
naika 11-13-2007, 08:15 PM Hi Guys,
I own a 325ic, e30m20, Right now, but I want to buy a hard top car for the winter and found a pretty nice 318ti.
Are they reliable? it has 100,000.
I might check out the car in the next few days since it s a few hours away from me.
If I go, it is to buy it so i want to do my research ahead.
Any advice is welcome
Thanks

I own a 325ic, e30m20, Right now, but I want to buy a hard top car for the winter and found a pretty nice 318ti.
Are they reliable? it has 100,000, is the turbo an issue with that type of mileage?
I know my M20 engine is solid as a rock but I am a bit concerned about the turbo 4cylinder since I know nothing about it.
I might check out the car in the next few days since it s a few hours away from me.

Are you under the impression that the 318Ti is turbocharged??
naika 11-13-2007, 08:34 PM Yes, isn't it?
Then I must sound very stupid, hahaha
What kind of engine does it have?
What kind of power?

Unless I have seriously missed something, it has the same M44 engine that my regular 318i has in it...1.9L I4, 140 HP, can't remember the torque, slow, but not as slow as alot will make it out to be if you get it with a manual transmission.
Good Luck

Yes, the one I'm looking at has a manual tranny. I never buy automatic cars.
I have owned BMWs since I was 19 (10 years ago) and I just learned today that the 318ti is not a turbo car. I can't believe I was that ignorant.
Anyways, I can live with 140hp for a DD, I'm trying to save my Cabbie from the winter, I spent to much money, time and effort rebuilding it.
Thanks
cemimms 11-13-2007, 08:44 PM What year is it, I should have mentioned the M42 1.8 L was used through 1995 e36 models, 96-98 318s saw the M44.
naika 11-13-2007, 08:46 PM it's a 95, 101,000 miles with dealer service records since 1997, 2 owner car.
Sounds pretty clean from what the seller is saying
car is black on gray interior.
Mad Machine 11-13-2007, 10:11 PM Where is it at? I see you are in Pa and I am not doing anything Thursday, saturday day, or sunday if you want to go and check it out
benfranklin 11-16-2007, 07:46 PM The 318ti may be a bit spartan, but it is actually well built. The 1995 does have the M42, which is a good engine. So is the M44. The front end is more like an e36. The rear, I've heard is more like an e30. Change the oil and get a tune up now and then and they are very reliable and get over 30-34 MPG on the highway....
zboot 11-16-2007, 10:00 PM It's a pretty reliable car. I've got a '98 with almost 140k miles on it. It's pretty peppy (keep in mind the HP to weight ratio) though yes, there are plenty of faster cars out there. Though, for a DD, it's pretty good. Depending on what part of the country you live in, expect 25-30mpg in the city if the car is stock.
Filip75 11-19-2007, 04:57 AM find out what has been changed out on it (rear strut mounts for example). I used to have a 95 ti and I soold it 3 years ago with 125,000 miles and it was running like a champ. There were several threads about TIs and possible problems associated with them a while ago. There was even a listg of items that needs to be checked out before you buy the car. Do a search on the topic with my name as a poster and you should come up with some results
Calypsocoupe96 11-19-2007, 05:09 AM Here's some info on the engines.
