There's a 1970 2002 up for sale that's a project car the owner has to sell. I'm not sure how complete it is, but w/o paint or motor what would be some ballpark figures for a good offer?

no drive train, very custom body all steel (flared fenders as far as I can tell), no rust, clean title, comes with new door panels, headliner, all rubber seals, glass, and other unspecified parts.

I've been jonsing for one now and I've got an m10 and 5 speed laying around out of a 318i...

Any idea how much it's worth? I want to be fair with an offer. I'm not looking for a stock 2002, so the flares etc aren't a problem. My dream was to drop a turbo'd m20 into one and turn it into a little hot rod. I think 02's are very charming and classic... but if I could turn this into a running, driving driving car for a reasonable price..

What do you consider a reasonable price ... ????

Okay backstory time.. The car has been up for sale in various places for about a 9mo or so (as long as I've been following it) and the price has dropped from about $5,000 to what it's now sitting at, which is $1500obo, $2500 for the car + new wheels and tires which I admit are pretty sharp looking. He doesn't have any other wheels for it at this time.

I still haven't looked at it, and I don't want to get his hopes up unless I can definitely raise the money to buy it so I've shot him an e-mail or two finally to see what's up.

He said the car is mostly there but not installed. Wiring is out but intact, all the interior minus seats (new headliner, new door panels), suspension is there and complete. Body is straight, custom sheet metal work has been done though, on the fenders (flared) as far as I can tell. Owner claims it's rust free and as far as I can tell it probably is considering the extent of the work he's done. He says in order to grasp the completeness (or lack thereof) I'd need to see it in person.

I'm not particularly interested in finding (or making) a cherry 2002. It doesn't have to be restored to perfection. I just kind of liked the idea of making a low riding little hot rod out of one. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to throw two bucket seats and/or a cage and turn it into a little firebreathing monster.

The problem is I don't know much about 2002s, or at least where to source parts etc. I have no idea how much work it would take to put one back together and make it driveable either. I've heard they're relatively simple cars but I wanted to ask around before I tried to raise the funds and see it in person.

Assuming the car is mildly complete and it just seems to need assembly, minor body work, paint, motor + trans what would be reasonable? I have a parts e30, with an m10 and a 5spd to swap in. I know modded 02's aren't really worth too much because people seem to be purists and don't like seeing them chopped up. I know that there have been a few cars locally that are in decent shape and sell for as low as $1000~ after being parked.

I don't really want to lowball but I want to be fair. Most of the value comes from the fact that I can do (most) of the work myself. I have a cherry picker, I have tools, I have knowledge, friends, and family. The problem is getting the money and making the decision. I could drop a motor in there 'for now' until I have a chance to build one to my liking and come up with the cash to install it properly.

I need your guy's experience and advice is welcome. I appreciate this greatly.

Modded 02s can fetch a pretty good penny, just depends on the quality of work. I think a metal flared car would rock. Heck, if you decide against it let me know...

I see what you're saying, I was just thinking that the market for modded 02's is alot smaller than a nice cherry one. I see more 'stock' 02s selling and this guy hasn't been able to get rid of his. (Edit: The flares aren't really large or boxy flares for clarification. They're all custom and entirely of his creation I believe.)

I really don't know what to offer the guy. I want to get it for cheap but I honestly can't say that I would ever be able to rip someone off for something they poured themselves into, especially something custom. I know it can't be worth much, and it's almost completely dismantled right now, and relatively modified, without motor or trans, but it's still worth something. The question is.. How much is a fair offer?

I have an e30 parts car (motor+trans.. + more?) I have the ability to put it back together.. and paint it.. I don't really have the knowledge of 2002s because I hardly ever see them, never driven one etc. Just a little bit I've read about them here and there.. but I know they aren't nearly as complicated as the nightmare car I'm driving right now (as much as I enjoy my e30). Would it be that hard to put together all the pieces and have a runner/driver ?

You can get about 99% of the parts the car came with new still today. It would definitely be a different experience from an E 30. Think of an E 30 as a luxury 02 with more power and gadgets... There is quite a few folks with 02 s and 02 knowledge in the PNW. A lot of them post on 2002faq.com. You could probably find lots of help over there.

I actually see alot of 02's around town. Most of those which are parked are heaps, though. Those that aren't are usually for sale.. :D they have a really loyal, die-hard following and I like that.

I'm really leaning towards this 02.. I wish I had some more cash to offer this guy for the car. I think it would be a fun experience.

EDIT:

WOO! Finally got a reply back after being absolutely jobless (not even part time) since September 1. over 2 dozen apps and a hand full of screenings.. Finally. Maybe the 2002 dream will happen after all. *knocks on wood*
