My last E28 needed a new hood & trunk lid. I found a donor vehicle through a friend, and it was an extremely easy swap for both parts. The paint code was even the same! I don't know why, but the Delphin Grey color seems to go bad - peeling clearcoat, fading & cracking, more than any other color I've seen. Anyway, the car I just got need two new front fenders. Rust at the wheel corners. Also a new hood & trunk lid, but I've done those. How hard is the fender swap? Should I replace the well liners as long as I've got 'em off? Anyone done this that's NOT a bodyman?

It's an easy job to remove the fender; you just have to track down all the 8mm bolts. It's a perfect time to replace the wheel liners if it's necessary as they have to come out anyway.

There are 8 or so bolts running along the top of the fender, under the weather stripping. There are two behind the wheel liner, near the door and one at the bottom on the outside of the fender. It might be buried under some rust proofing material. There are also two or three on the front of the fender holding the various bumper blind, air dam and valance pieces on. Finally there is a couple near the headlight bucket holding the fender to the front piece.

The hardest part of the whole job is realigning the fender when you're putting it back on. Getting the gaps between the door and fender and the gaps between the hood and fender are always tricky. Not impossible, just takes a lot of trial-and-error and patience.

Yeah, those Miata's are everywhere in club racing! I had the chance to autocross one a few years ago and have to admit it was a blast. The little thing felt like a go-kart after driving the E36 that I had at the time.

A couple of weeks ago we had a BMW CCA club racing school here at Gateway and I couldn't believe how much fun it was! You guys have to do this sometime!

Here are a few shots from the weekend:

I am in Kalamazoo with a 1983 e28 with good driver side fender and many other parts. I am parting it out to repair my two 1988 528E's. Cliff
