View Full Version : What causes a spring to bind?

I installed my UUC camber plates this weekend. I have the GC track/school kit with 2.5" springs. Now my springs are binding when I turn the wheel.

When I installed the plates, I noticed that the upper spring perch was coming in contact with the lower strut mount/bearing. The perch has a small spacer built into it, but wasn't enough.

I wound up using (2) 14mm washers per side to space the perch and lower strut mount. They moved freely before being installed on the car. As a matter of fact, they had almost a full washer space between them. (1 washer as a spacer was barely not thick enough) There should be no reason why they would be coming into contact and making the springs bind.

I caled UUC to make sure the plates were compatible with the GC system. They said that there should not be any problems. Is there something else I should look at on the suspension? Anyone else running this setup- what did you do to space the parts? Any issues?

Any and all help is appreciated. :help

The factory upper spring perch has a larger diameter, allow it to clear the bearing plate on the camber plate. The upper spring perch of the GC kit has a smaller diameter and is bowl shaped, which is probably what's causing your binding. When you apply weight on the UUC camber plates, they will compress slightly due to the urethane isolation. The cheap solution is to use more washers, but you might want to add more than just one since the urethane will compress over time. A different spring perch would also work, but I don't know where else to get a 2.5" perch that is compatible with the UUC camber plate (the TC Kline one would work, but it's for a 60mm spring).

I like the design of the Vorshlag plate much better. One reason being that the bearing design allows the strut shaft to pivot (when camber changes) and rotate. The UUC design relies on the compliance of the urethane for pivoting.

I like the vorshlag ones a bit better too, and they are what I intended to go with... however, I found the UUC ones NIB for 200 bucks. Can't beat that. Besides, I am a big fan of UUC.

4ZPN- you were completely right. I just pulled the wheel... the urethane did compress. Looks like I will be adding 2 more washers this weekend. Hopefully that will be plenty. Maybe I can find something to use as a spacer instead of stacked up washers, but I guess there isn't anything wrong with that. Hopefully my new alignment doesn't get too screwed up either.
