Looks like we are good to go. PCA is mandating changes to harness configurations starting in January. One of those changes was to ban 4-point harnesses. The Scroth quick-fit is a 4 point harness, but has an anti-submarining feature when used with stock seats. PCA has ruled that Schroth quick-fits are legal in 2008 with stock equipment.

Who's we? PCA also allows people to race with bolt in roll bars, so thats a bit scary. I got a chance to read their clubracing rule book earlier this year and it's about as vague as one could get.

I think he is just saying for us BMW guys that run their events we would be fine with the quick fits to run "legally"

Don't get too angry ;)

What about other Schroth Rallye belts that aren't Quick-fits? They have ASM also.

Interesting, this was causing a lot of heartburn locally and the local PCA chapter had its hands tied, even though they disagreed with the policy. BTW, as you state it, "with stock equipment", means that you can install a 4 point harness in a car with integral head rests. If the shoulder belts dont' route through the headrest, it is essentially a death trap.

I should have given a little more background on this to keep the angry old farts in the kitchen....:D

PCA has a new safety policy that takes effect in 2008 that essentially bans 4 point harnesses and 5/6 point setups on seats not designed for 5/6 point setups for HPDEs. The motivation behind this change is the newer Porsche seat designs that do not allow harnesses (even with a proper roll bar/harness bar) to work as designed. This alienated everyone using schroth clip-ins, which are pretty common on BMWs. The seats suck, and most people, including myself are not willing to convert their street car to a trailer queen just to get a good firm grip on our ass. So with the help of the local Porsche chapter and their CDI, we are making progress, basically all the way there now, to get an exception made for schroth ASM harnesses in DOT and NHTSA approved applications.

I guess that is a grey area. There may be some US configurations ...i.e. seat designs that do not allow the schroth system to work as designed. E46s are all compliant as far as I know. NO idea about the E36. If there is a stock setup that is not as Schroth expects or has designed for, then I don't know the answer.

This has been standard policy for us (Triangle Z -- Tarheel SCC, NC) for a few years now. The only 4-point system we'll allow is the DOT approved schroths... BUT, they must be DOT approved for that particular vehicle. (There have been cases where we've accepted a cam-locked version which is identical, but not DOT approved though.)

Yah. I used the 4 point Quick Fit with ASM with BMWCCA for a good time :) They are the DOT approved versions. For an HPDE I feel they are perfectly safe.

If you are going to go too a PCA event with the 4 point I would highly advise you to contact them in advance and check to see it they will accept them. Most PCA regions already ban 4 points and I doubt they will change there mind, even if PCA headquarters says OK.
