What type of racing you looking at doing? I have owned both and if it is bang for your buck you want, I would go with the E36. For very little you can make them into really nice track cars. Parts for the E46 are on the high side and unless you go F/I hard to get large gains out of the S54.

well I have a current race car...i would plan on using as my daily driver until i had the courage to put it on the track...probably do no motor mods...more than enough hp for the track...just suspension...maybe bbk

I would look for a somewhat low milage E36 put a TwinScrew on it with coilovers, BBK, and you have a really fun car!!! If you want to make more power go with the Dinan S/C kit and mess with the trim on the Vortech blower. Don't get me wrong, I love my E46 to death but you can put together a really fast car at half the price of a moded E46.
