Guys, please explain this to me: the new 2008 335xi - is that E92 and what does it mean?

E90 = Sedan
E91 = Touring (wagon)
E92 = Coupe
E93 = Convertible

This is the chassis designation and has nothing to do with the engine (328/335) or the final drive (i/xi).

The previous models were the E46, which ran from 1999 to 2005. The E90 series began with the introduction of the E90 Sedan for the 2006 Model Year.

If I am not mistaken, the current 3 series generation is the 1st to have different platform designation for the various body types. Not sure if the platforms are significantly different to warrant that or if it is a marketing thing. Previously 1 designation applied to sedan/coupe/convertible/wagon variants (e21/e30/e36/e46).
