so most everything on my 87' 528e is working properly, but the speedometer doesnt work. we've opened that up and pulled out just the speedometer to find that it is(as we expexted) a broken gear on the back of the speedometer. does anyone have experience in this and can help me figure out how to remove and replace the cover over these gears etc.??

thanks

Jay, thanks for that link. I just removed the cluster again and took everything apart for another repair. The main (~12 tooth) drive gear was chewed to hell so I cracked it off and made a drive gear out of a piece of medium hard rubber. Glued it on and it lasted for a few thousand miles. Now its chewing up the next gear so I have to fix that one every few months. I'm using my surfboard repair epoxy "Solarez". Just put a dollop where the broken teeth are, step out into the beautiful Southern California sun, and then put it all back together. I love my 20 year old car. I just think of all the other things that these repairs are saving me from.... TV, friends, the internet, .......
