View Full Version : picked up from dealer...new problems
pphil09 11-10-2007, 11:10 PM I picked up my 323i today, with 2 new drive belts, and a new intake boot, and also some new hoses for PS. The car has suddenly developed a smell of burning rubber, that is only noticable when idling. Any ideas as to what is causing this? Is there anyway that the clutch is not fully disengaging, causing it to burn? Also, the engine has developed a distinct ticking that appears to be coming from under the lower right hand part of the cover. These were definetly not there when I dropped off the car. And there is also more resistance when shifting the car into first...the shifter dosent slide up iinto gear as easily.
:help
Ianbiz 11-11-2007, 12:46 AM they did something to it :shifty :(
Is the burning smell clutch or rubber?
M0nK3y 11-11-2007, 12:50 AM Most Likely someone who drove it around the lot can't drive manual. If its a burnning clutch. The smell will last around a couple days, then fade away
pphil09 11-11-2007, 01:02 AM I don't know what clutch smells like :dunno
It seems to be more noticable when the climate control fan speed is higher.

The fan makes it more noticable for sure. Really smell it at idle
pphil09 11-12-2007, 01:24 AM bump
nicknoodles 11-12-2007, 01:51 AM sometimes new belts have an odor, but it wouldnt stick around much, you shouldnt be smelling any clutch unless you yourself are burning it, the smell might be the new intake boot, especially since you said it smells more when the fan speed is faster...i'd give it a week before complaining to the dealer
as far as the ticking noise, i dont really unstand where its coming from, the plastic engine cover? maybe they broke a clip or one side isnt clipped in all the way
pphil09 11-12-2007, 01:53 AM no, it is a consistent ticking noise, coming from the engine, but it is near the lower right hand cover of the engine cover, almost parallel to the airbox
nicknoodles 11-12-2007, 01:55 AM hmmm, not too sure then....do you only hear it at idle?, does the ticking get faster as rpm increase?
ggareis 11-12-2007, 02:00 AM The click is it anything like this? http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=770210

when I pull up next to another solid object (car, wall,), the ticking increases with RPM's.
nicknoodles 11-12-2007, 02:04 AM ugh, maybe its a similar problem to what he posted above....maybe its valve tap

mine is only noticable when the hood is up, or I am standing directly in front of the car. The ZHP engine rattle is quite loud, as I've heard, and since I am not able to hear it from the sides of the car, I dont think it is this. Also, mine is doing it at any temp. Most noticably when cold actually.

WTF.
Could've the dealership rigged this? It wasnt doing this when I dropped it off.
nicknoodles 11-12-2007, 02:17 AM then maybe its something simple, check clamps and connections, maybe something is loose and needs to be tightened up
pphil09 11-12-2007, 02:19 AM 1st thing tomorrow, it is going back. I just want it gone. It was something they did, and I dont want it to develop into anything worse
nicknoodles 11-12-2007, 02:26 AM yeah go smack some fools...bring the powder
pphil09 11-12-2007, 02:30 AM 30-06 :shifty
I would be cool with them holding it ANOTHER week and a 1/2, just as long as I get a 335

Are you still under warranty with an 8 year old car? I would never trust the dealership to do even these simple maintenance items, indy shop or DYI, unless you want to get raped.
