Using my modic-3, i can't find any control modules what so ever, when the ignition is on (data transmission disturbed).
However, when turning the ignition on and off again, lots of modules can be found, but not the DME, AGS and a few more.
And, when starting the diagnose, the modic can't identify the car automaticly.
I have tested the modic-3 on other cars successfully, so the problem must be on the diagnose bus in my car. Obviously something is jamming or shorting the bus when the key is in position-2, but so far i haven't been able to pinpoint it.
Using carsoft 6.5 and bmw scanner 1.35, it all works fine...?!?
When browsing different forums, faulty controlunits jamming the bus has been one of the most frequent causes, ground problems as well...
Everything works on my car, so the i-bus, k-bus etc can't be totally jammed or blocked.
I have tried disconnecting the abs, navigation, telephone, ags and the AC (ihka) control modules, but to no avail...

The car is a BMW 523 iA Touring, july-1998, high IKE.

Hopefully someone have some knowledge about this problem.

I have got a 1998 E39 523i, and I am facing the same problem!!! I am using a cheap scanner "CAN OBD2" I am not sure if its the scanner or my car...

I found the source of problems on my car. When i disconnected the DME, the modic-3 identified the car immediately, and now i have access to car memory, programming etc. What still bugs me is if reprogramming the dme will help, and how im going to manage it when the the bus link is jammed as soon as i plug in the dme...

No luck... disconnect the DME.. still can't get the scanner to connect, I think the chippy "CAN OBD2" is just waste of money.
